Tim Sears Jr. Wins Barnburner Fulton Speedway 358 Modified Feature

Dave Medler June 10, 2018

FULTON, NY – The 358 DIRTcar Modified feature Saturday night at the Fulton Speedway had fans on the edge of their seats right down to the checkered flag that would see Hastings, NY Tim Sears Jr. make the trip to victory lane.

Sears, who started 11th would chase and make the winning pass going by modified rookie Todd Root who lead from the drop of the green with just 2-laps to go in the 35-lap feature. The win was Sears’ second this season on the ‘Highbanks.’

Other winners on Syracuse Haulers night were Corey Barker and Mark Yorker (SUNY Canton DIRTcar Sportsman) Sean Beardsley (Billy Whittaker Cars & Trux Rush Late Models) Jake Davis (E&V Energy Novice Sportsman).

Phil Vigneri and Todd Root brought the Tracey Road Equipment DIRTcar 358 Modifieds down to the green with Root grabbing the early advantage in the 35-lap main.

With 5-laps complete modified rookie Root opened a full straightaway lead while Vigneri chased alone in second. Behind the top-two, Jordan McCreadie, Glenn Forward, Billy Whittaker and Bobby Herrington ran in a tight pack battling for third through sixth.

Root opened a 5.8 seconds lead on lap 10 as he started putting cars a lap down. Vigneri, Herrington, McCreadie and Whittaker were jockeying for position while in heavy traffic.

A yellow on lap-12 would erase the 6.6 seconds lead Root had turning fast laps running the top-of the speedway. This would put McCreadie who went from fourth to second on lap-11 right next to Root for the restart.

On the restart McCreadie would lead for what seemed like a blink of an eye as Root fought back on the top to retake the top-spot.

On lap-15, still running the high-side, Root led by 10-car lengths with Whittaker moving to second with McCreadie, Herrington and Tim Sears Jr. in a close fight of their own for third through fifth.

At the halfway point Whittaker cut Root’s lead down to a few car lengths as the battle was on for the lead. Herrington, Sears and McCreadie still showed on the scoring tower.

With 10-laps to go and two-wide lapped traffic slowed Root down and allowed Whittaker to move right on the leaders back bumper. Herrington, Sears and Larry Wight who started 17th joined the battle at the front of the field in fifth.

As the final laps started to click off the temperature at the front of the field was turned way up as the front runners fought for positions in heavy traffic using every inch of the speedway.

Sears would fight his way to second with 5-laps to go and took off after Root with Whittaker right there in third waiting to pounce on any mistakes by the top-two.

With 2-laps to go and Sears working the bottom, he was able to capitalize, getting by Root with back-markers two and three wide.

Once out-front Tim Sears Jr. went under the checkers 1.731 seconds ahead of Todd Root. Larry Wight came on strong for a third-place finish with Billy Whittaker fourth and Bobby Herrington fifth.

The amazing support for the SUNY Canton DIRTcar Sportsman continued Saturday night as 59 cars signed into the pit area setting up two 25-lap features.

In the first feature Dorian Wahdan would lead the opening 3-laps before Corey Barker took over the top-spot on a lap-4 restart.

At the 10-lap point Barker, running the bottom of the speedway opened up a half a straightaway lead. Joe Sobotka, Wahdan, Nick Krause, DJ Forbes and Alan Fink used every inch of the speedway fighting for second through sixth.

With 10-laps to go, Barker on the bottom groove and Krause using the top of the speedway were in a two-car breakaway at the front of the field as the final laps started clicking off the lap counter.

The final caution flag of the race would wave with 5-laps to go setting up a dash to the checkers. Corey Barker was too strong on the bottom of the speedway as he was the first under the checkers. Krause backed up his win Friday at the Brewerton Speedway with a strong second place finish. Alan Fink, Chris Mackey and Jackson Gill came home third through fifth.

In the second Sportsman feature Mark Yorker would set a quick pace in the early going after taking the lead on lap-2 from Tim Abate.

Yorker, who ran the bottom groove, looked like he was on rails opening a 3.5 seconds lead on the field. Behind Yorker you could have thrown a blanket over Abate, Tony Finch II and Greg Doust as they used top-middle and low groove racing for second, third and fourth.

With 10-laps left and no yellows to slow the pace, Yorker was well over 4 seconds ahead with the race behind him tight between Finch, Abate, Doust and Zach Sobotka in the top-five.

There was no stopping Mark Yorker the rest of the way as he cruised 2.6 seconds ahead of second place Tony Finch II at the finish. Zach Sobotka, Greg Doust and Jessica Power came home third through fifth.

Max Hill would jump out to the early lead in the 20-lap Billy Whittaker Cars & Trux RUSH Late Models before Jason Parkhurst took over the top spot after a caution on lap-3 and restart.

At the 5-lap point Parkhurst, Hill and Fleming were in a three-car breakaway battle at the front of the field leaving the lead in doubt.

Parkhurst was still in control at the front of the field at the halfway point as Sean Beardsley moved into second and took off after the leader. Hill running the race of his young career, Bret Belden and Kevan Cook showed third through fifth on the scoring tower.

The race came down to a battle royal between Jason Parkhurst and Sean Beardsley as they put on a show for the fans.

Beardsley, who has been knocking on victory lane door this season, finally kicked it open taking the lead on lap-16 by inches at the flag stand. Once out-front Beardsley would go under the checkers 1.6 seconds ahead of Parkhurst. Bret Belden, Kevan Cook and Max Hill finished third through fifth.

Jake Davis would lead every lap of the 15-lap E&V Energy Novice Sportsman feature. The win wasn’t easy as he had to hold off late race pressure from Quinn Wallis for the narrow 0.128 of a second win at the checkers. Kearra Backus, Tyler Murray and Robert Gage finished third through fifth.
