A PERFECT NIGHT FOR MARTIN ROY

GRANBY, QC, June 5, 2004 -- After being involved in a spectacular crash on opening night, Martin Roy came back strongly to upset his opponents and registered a perfect night in the Modified, last Friday at Autodrome Granby.

Fourth on the starting grid, Roy who was the winner of the first Modified heat of the evening, slid into second place just behind American driver Leon Gonyo on lap 4. He was followed by Kayle Robidoux and Alain Boisvert, two other drivers forced to withdraw in the May 21st program.

While Gonyo was leading, fans were witnesses to an interesting battle for the third spot involving Robidoux, Boisvert and David Hébert who had been able to make his way from his ninth spot on the grid. At the two thirds of this 30-lap feature race, Hébert took the third spot from Robidoux while Dave Camara, two times champion at Granby, was able to make his way through the fifth place.

Then, suddenly, Gonyo started to slow down his pace and this allowed Hébert to grab the lead on lap 23 in front of Gonyo and Martin Roy who dropped third. Two laps later, on the second yellow flag of the race due to a contact between Mario Moreau and Claude Brouillard and a spin out for Richard Chauvin, Gonyo went to his pit to quit the race due to mechanical problems.

At the restart, Hébert continued to lead but, two laps later, he couldn’t hold on allowing Martin Roy to fly home with his first victory of the season followed by Hébert, Robidoux, Réal Lafrance and Dave Camara. Following his second place finish, Hébert is now in the first spot of the CARQUEST Auto parts championship trial while Claude Brouillard, who was holding this position before this program, had a bad night with a 16th place finish.

The other qualification heat was won by Stéphane LaFrance while Dave Camara was the consi winner.

In the Sportsman division, Sébastien Gougeon was the winner over his 28 rivals. Eleventh on the grid, Gougeon didn’t take too long to catch up to the leaders. On the first restart on lap 7, Gougeon took the third spot just behind the leader, Jocelyn Cordeau, and Alain Mathieu. Two laps later, Mathieu couldn’t resist to the charge of Gougeon who immediately started challenging Cordeau.

After only three other laps, Cordeau couldn’t resist to Gougeon and Steve Bernard. Both drivers gave all they had but Gougeon had the last word.

In the Semi-Pro division, three times track champion Stéphane Larivière got his first win of the season while in the 4 Cylinders, Sylvain Gagnon was the winner.
