McCREADIE SCORES SECOND WIN IN A ROW AT BREWERTON
BREWERTON, NY....."Barefoot" Bob McCreadie battled through the field and avoided contact with lapped cars that took out race leader Dale Planck to score his second win in a row at Brewerton Speedway on Team Services night. Rob Keller took his second Brewerton win in three days in the IMCA Modifieds, while Troy Van Allen took his eighth win of the year in the Dwarf cars and Roger West captured his second win of the year in the 4 Cylinders.
Steve Hulsizer grabbed the lead at the start of the 35-lap DIRT Modified feature event while Chuck Hebing moved in quickly to challenge for the top spot. Dale Planck also showed early strength as Jimmy Phelps moved in on Hulsizer on lap 4 to challenge him for the lead. Chuck Bower hooked up with Planck as they battled within the top five.
Planck moved past Bower and charged towards the lead, taking second from Hulsizer on lap 9 and jumping into the lead one lap later. Hebing grabbed second on lap 11 and for several laps Planck and Hebing ran side by side for the lead. Further back, 'Barefoot' Bob McCreadie and Danny Johnson were running side by side for position. Hebing and Planck traded the lead back and forth until McCreadie moved past Hebing and closed in on Planck.
McCreadie and Planck fought through heavy lapped traffic with Planck maintaining the advantage until lap 32, when Steve Lead and Tim Fuller tangled in turns three and four in front of the leaders. Planck could not avoid the spinning race cars, made contact with them, and spun out, handing the lead to McCreadie. 'Barefoot' held on over the final three laps, holding off current point leader Billy Decker for his second straight win at the "D-Shaped DIRT Demon." Decker was second, with Danny Johnson holding off brother Alan for third. Hebing was passed by Pat Ward in the final corner for the fifth spot. DIRT Modified heats were won by Planck, McCreadie, and Hebing.
Kenny Rogers was the early leader in the 20-lap IMCA Modified feature event with Don Alvord taking over the second spot. Les Hubbard and Pat Hobbs ran third and fourth until they tangled and fell back in the running order. Rob Keller then moved into the third spot on lap 4 and picked off first and second in the next two laps to take the lead.
Sean Lias, current IMCA Modified point leader, stepped up into the third spot behind Alvord by lap 7 and they engaged in a battle for position that lasted the rest of the feature event. Bob Bradt slipped into the fourth spot while Rogers was doing everything he could to hold on to fifth over George Valenti. In the final laps, Keller had a half straightaway lead and held it to the finish over Alvord, who got the best of his battle with Lias. Bradt held fourth with Valenti in the final corner grabbing the fifth spot from Rogers. IMCA Modified heats were won by Carmen Vona, Keller, and Ron O'Neil.
The 20-lap Dwarf car feature began with Kevin DonHauser taking the lead, but it wasn't long before the two top guns in the division, Troy Van Allen and Tony Buffa, had worked their way to the front. Van Allen took the top spot on lap 4 with Buffa moving into the second spot on lap 5. The duo pulled away from the rest of the field and encountered traffic while Darren Forbes was involved in a four way battle for position that also featured Pat Pontello, Barry Virts, and Eric Crawford.
Buffa made several strong challenges to Van Allen, but could not catch the multi time winner as Van Allen put his eighth win of the year into the record books. Forbes nailed down third at the finish, followed by Virts and Eric Crawford. Dwarf car heats were won by Van Allen, Ken Gamlen, and Carl Crawford Sr.
The 15-lap 4 Cylinder feature was a great race that began with Jason Amidon as the leader until he was passed by Harvey Calkins Jr. Calkins only held the point for two laps before Roger West Jr. nipped by him. Calkins hooked up in battle with Mark Warner for second and they were joined by Jim Olin.
A spinning lapped car brought about some anxious moments on lap 11 as West barely avoided contact. Olin could not and went to the pits with rear end damage. Warner and Calkins continued to swap second and third as West pulled away out front for his second win of 1999. Warner had the last move on Calkins as he took the second spot, with Bob Whipple and John West completing the top five. 4 Cylinder heats were won by Brian Evenden, Jim Lalone, and Calkins, with Evenden earning top honors in the Team Services 4 Cylinder Dash for Cash.
Bill Trexler bested a field of 16 One on One Spectator Racers to grab the win in their portion of the program.
Next Friday night, it's "Friday the 13th Fever" with a regular show of DIRT Modifieds, IMCA Modifieds, Dwarf cars, and 4 Cylinders plus Double Decker car races. Gates open at 5:30pm and racing starts at 7:30pm.
