Hoffman Picks Up Fifth Win of 2002; Shane Smith Crowned Jasper Sprint Champ

Bridgeport, NJ – Allentown, PA’s Doug Hoffman drove the Lincoln Auto Body Teo #5 to his fifth checkered flag of the season, winning the twenty-five lap big block modified feature Saturday night at South Jersey’s Bridgeport Speedway. Hoffman started the race on the outside pole, and led the entire distance for the $2500 victory, getting his seventy-fourth career modified win at New Jersey’s fastest dirt track. In other action at the speedway, Shane Smith didn’t finish the Jasper Winged Sprint A-Main after dropping out on the fifteenth lap with a flat right rear tire, but he still finished high enough to claim the title of 2002 Bridgeport Speedway Sprint Champion, while his close friend, Al DeAngelis, drove to his first career win in the winged sprints. DeAngelis piloted the McCleary US1 in the twenty lap A-Main, winning in just his second time out in the car. The Bridgeport Sportsman twenty lap feature was won by Richie Pratt, who drove the Klair #34 for his sixth win of the season, in a race that went non-stop while taking just a tick over eight minutes to run. The final event of the night was the Outlaw Stock feature, which turned out to be real barnburner, with Curtis Nichols taking the win in the twenty lap race after putting on an exhibition of door to door racing with Dave Wilhelm. Nichols took the lead in turn four of the last lap, after running side by side with race leader Wilhelm for two complete laps in a display that had the fans on their feet at the end.
