CAN-AM WINS TO WILCOX, TUCKER, FACHINI EISELE AND SANFORD, GILL AND HALL TRACK CHAMPIONS

LAFARGEVILLE NY: The Labor Weeekend brought out a great crowd to the Can-Am Speedway to witness the final points event for the 358 DIRT Modifieds and DIRT Sportsman along with the World Record Motorcycle attempt by Sky Lungston. The nights sponsors, Jefferson Concrete and Sboro Family Restaurants are both heavily involved in the sponsorship of racers at Can-Am and were out in force to cheer on their favorite drivers.

All eyes were on three drivers in the 358 DIRT Modified 25 lap feature, point leader Bill Gill held a slim 10 point lead over rookie Frank Caprara who had just a (2) point lead over Billy Wilcox. The talented field came to the green flag with George McIntyre and Dale Eggleston on the front row. McIntyre jumped to the early lead and began to distance himself from the pack, while the three championship contenders worked their way towards the front. McIntyre opened up a huge lead but on lap 6 the caution flew for the slowed car of Lansing Petzoldt bunching the field together. Although not in the hunt for the track championship, for the first time in many years, Pat O'Brien worked his way into second on lap 8 and began to work on McIntyre for the top spot. O'Brien tried high and low but could not find a way around. At the halfway point Gill was sitting in the forth spot with Caprara in 13th and Wilcox in 6th. O'Brien was shown as the leader on lap 14 but as the two leaders entered turn one contact was made with O'Brien suffering damage putting him out for the night. McIntyre now looked to be on his way to his first win of the season but while riding under caution on lap 22 the right rear tire went flat forcing him to the pits. Greg Meeks was having a great run and grabbed the lead on the restart with Gill second and Wilcox third. Meeks took the white flag as the leader but Wilcox knew his only shot at the track championship was to fight for the win and he charged around and into the lead on the final lap for the win. Meeks came across second followed by Gill, Jeff Sykes and Steve Roberts. Gill's third place finish was enough to secure the 1999 track championship by a slim (4) points over Wilcox. Wilcox, who had (6) points in the halfway leader challenge was awarded $1000 from the Appledale Farmers Market and Sboro Family Restaurants.

Steve Hall wrapped up another championship just by taking the green flag in the 15 lap feature event. Larry Lamb and Wayne Side set the pace and Side charged into the lead at the drop of the green. Lamb settled into second with Matt Butler moving from the 7th starting spot to third on lap 1. As they neared the halfway point the first caution was displayed grouping many of the top runners together at the front of the field. Side remained the leader but a flat tire forced him to the pits on lap 9. Hall inherited the lead and looked to seal his championship with a win but a flat tire sent him in on lap 13 handing the lead over to Ben Tucker who was being pressured by Scott MacCue. Tucker went on for his second win in a row over MacCue, Butler, RJ Gibbons and rookie Jim Eaton.

The IMCA Modifieds would still have one point race remaining after this weeks 15 lap feature that saw Jamie Platt and Bill Klinkowski on the front row. Platt, a rookie in 1999, has showed great improvement each week out and this week jumped into the lead at the completion of lap 1. Neal Edgar has had terrible luck this season at Can-Am but was in front by lap 2 and hoping for a win. Eddie O'Neil, last weeks winner, moved in to challenge for the top spot along with point leader Cory Fachini. The leaders put on a great show for the fans with Edgar continuing to hold the advantage until lap 14 when Fachini took over command. Fachini went on to claim the win with Edgar, O'Neil, Steve Bidwell and Debbie Stevenson rounding out the top 5 finishers.

Clint Middlemiss and Laurie Handschuh brought the 12 lap Street Stock feature to the green and again this week Handschuh blasted to the front. Steve Rookey was the first to challenge for the lead but point leader Bill Eisele was on the charge and moved into second on lap 5. The two battled at the front of the pack but on lap 8 the two came together sending Handschuh spinning collecting newcomer David Jobson. Eisele was shown as the leader on the restart and went on for the win over Rookey, Brian Rogers, Dave Marshall and Andy Wells.

Scott Schara and Chris Taylor shared the front row for the 10 lap IMCA Hobby Stock feature but a very quick Kim Mallette came from her 5th starting position to be shown as the leader on lap 1. A number of minor cautions slowed the event but on each restart Mallette regained the advantage. The crowd was pulling for the high scool rookie to pick up her first win of the season but on lap 5 she spun coming off of turn four handing the lead over to Joseph Combs. Combs was shown as the leader on laps 5 & 6 but George Sanford had made his way to the front from the 17th starting spot and took over the top spot on lap 7. Sanford went on for the win over Erv Miller, Chris Warner, Charles Duffany and Taylor.

Next Saturday night will be the final event for the Street Stocks, the 358 DIRT Modifieds, DIRT Sportsman, IMCA Modifieds and IMCA Hobby Stocks will all be in competiiton along with a special appearance by the Mid-State Vintage Stock Car Club. Racing will be sponsored by Clean Burn Waste Oil Furnases, gates will open at 5:00 with the green flag waving at 7:00.
