SCHULZ WINS PRO STOCK SUPER DIRT SERIES RACE AT CORNWALL
CORNWALL- Dave Schulz got the break he needed on the final lap of the Empire Sports Network Super DIRT Series event for Pro Stocks. The result was the Somerset, New York winning the 50 lap race on Sunday night at Cornwall Motor Speedway.
Schulz saw the yellow flag come out on the last turn of the last lap just as Pete Stefanski had pulled alongside. The caution, brought about by a multi car pileup in turn 3 allowed Schulz to go wire to wire for the win. Stefanski settled for second followed by PJ Peters, Steve Devos and Joey Ladouceur. Ladouceur had a good run getting as high as second before his engine began to sour in the closing laps. The fifth place finish, however was good enough for the Alexandria pilot to take the four race Mr. Radiator series for Pro Stocks. Jon Miller went away happy as well as he took the winner take all 6 lap dash for $600.
There was two grooves for the 30 lap Modified feature, when the high groove was working best Joel Doiron was going to the front. When the low groove was best it was Dave Heaslip at the front. Heaslip slid by Doiron on the final restart and became the first three time winner in the Modifieds in 2002. David Hebert recovered from early problems to finish second followed by Brian McDonald, Dan Jalbert and a fading Doiron. A protest was launched following the race that leaves the point standings between Laurent Ladouceur, Mark Hitchcock and Doiron very much in doubt heading to the final race night next week. Both Ladouceur and Hitchcock were involved in a back stretch melee near the halfway point that complicated matters further. The protest will be dealt with in the next few days.
Kees VanWinden continues to show the way in the Duke Stock division. VanWinden powered to his 7th feature win of 2002 easily outdistancing Dave Renaud. Tammy Jalbert survived a number of incidents all around her to finish third, with Kevin McRae and Robin Laframboise rounding out the fast five.
Stuart Mullin won the Rookie class event. Points leader Rosco Garreau was second with Danielle Legault, Kevin Fetterly and Nico Leblanc scoring top five finishes.
Next Sunday night at Cornwall Motor Speedway features the biggest race of 2002, the Jiffy 100 part of the Turning Stone Casino Super DIRT Series for 358 Modifieds. All the big guns from across Ontario, New York and Quebec are expected to be on hand to compete for the $25,00 purse. There will also be a full program for the Pro Stocks, Dukes and Rookies. The green flag drops at 7pm.
