O'BRIEN WINS JIFFY 100, DOIRON HEADING TO SYRACUSE

Pat O'Brien took home the Modified checkered flag in the Jiffy Auto Service 100 at Cornwall Motor Speedway. It was the last official race of the season at the quarter-mile oval. O'Brien had to fend off younger brother, Danny and an unrelenting Joel Doiron. Second generation driver, Doiron earned the spot at the season ending championship race in Syracuse, New York. "My crew deserves a lot of the credit for the set up of the car," said Doiron. The Jiffy race capped a solid two weeks for Doiron at Cornwall. He finished 2nd in last week's feature. A packed house patiently waited through a 45 minute rain delay for the 30 car feature. During the race, Pat O'Brien (Kingston, Ontario) took over the lead on lap 28, lapped traffic by lap 30 and he never looked back. He had to contend with brother Danny (Kingston, Ontario) from lap 55 on. Doiron (Alexandria, Ontario) started the feature 4th and flipped between 3rd, 4th and 5th for three quarters of the 100-lap race but gained 3rd place for good by passing Dave Heaslip on lap 72. Heaslip (Smiths Falls, Ontario.ended the feature in 4th. Because the forecast called for rain on and off all night, track officials decided early on to count the cautions from lap 1 through 50 to ensure the first half of the race going ahead as scheduled. Lap 51 to the finish was counted on green only.

The Late Model champion at Cornwall for the year 2000 is Marc Therrien from Alexandria, Ontario. He finished the 20-lap feature race 2nd to solidify his championship. Lee Ladouceur unofficially finished 2nd in the points with Billy King in 3rd. The feature race was won by "Bulldog" Dave Bissonette.

While Mother Nature co-operated with track officials for the Modified and Late Model races, Duke and Rookie stocks were not so lucky. As the Duke feature field was coming on to the track, rain started again and didn't' let up, forcing officials to cancel the features for the Dukes as well as the Rookies. That also means that the Duke champion for 2000 is Stephane Lemire from Drummondville, Quebec. The Rookie track champion for this year is Kees Van Winden from Moorewood, Ontario.
