MUSSER GETS 3RD IN MODIFIED LITES

By Charlie Brown, Delmar, DE (6/22/02) - "Quick" Rick Bishop of Greensboro, Md. took the with ten laps left to go and never looked back as he drove to his first win of the season in the 25-lap Big Block Modified feature, Saturday night at the Delaware International Speedway. Landis Musser of Laurel, Del. continued his successful season as he recorded his third win of 2002 in the 15-lap Modified Lite main.

Cliff Foskey looked strong as he set the early pace in the Modified main. The caution was out on lap one when Kyle Strickler spun to miss a slowing car. On the restart, Adam Jarrell moved into the second spot with H.J. Bunting taking third. Bunting climbed into the second spot on lap five with Bishop following into the third spot.

Foskey maintained a quick pace while Bishop battle by Bunting for second on lap twelve. At the halfway sign the top five were Foskey, Bishop. Bunting, Ricky Johnson, and Duane Rust. Bishop completed his charge to the front on lap 15 just as the second and final yellow flew for Steve Downs.

Bishop was flawless from the restart on and pulled away to a 3.736 seconds victory in his Clearview Farms/Matco Tools/Teo. "We've had a pretty fast car - consistently fast all year. We just haven't been able to put it all together here at the finish," commented Bishop about his current point lead. "We'll take this and come on next week because it's still a long season."

Foskey turned in a solid performance for second with Johnson taking third. Bunting and Rust rounded out the top five. Sixth through tenth were Rose, Deron Rust, Andy Best, Craig Mullins, and Strickler. Heats were won by Foskey, Bunting, and Johnson with Deron Rust winning the consolation.

Ron Riccio held off Landis Musser for the first two laps of the Modified Lite feature before Musser moved on top. Jon Callaway moved into the second spot on lap five. Herb Tunis tangled with Mike Vammino coming off the fourth turn and went hard into the wall. Tunis was not injured.

At the halfway sign, Callaway was keeping the pressure on Musser with Mike Stratton, Riccio, and last week's winner, Tom Curtis running in the top five. The battle continued until 11 when Curtis came to a stop. Under the yellow, Callaway headed to the pits. Stratton was now in second but could not mount a challenge on Musser who drove to his third win of the season in the Carey's Towing/Elliott Farms/Pro/Suzuki.

Rounding out the top five were Vammino, Riccio, and George Richardson. Sixth through tenth were John Curtis, Tom Curtis, Lucky Kohland, Joe Warren, and Dale Hawkins. Musser and Tom Curtis won the heats.

This Saturday night will be O'Neal Brothers Home Center & Lumber Night with the URC Sprints along with the four weekly divisions. Gates open at 4:30 p.m. with heats at 7:30.
