STRUNK AND SHUEY WIN OPEN COMP FEATURES AT GRANDVIEW

BECHTELSVILLE, PA SEPTEMBER 25, 2004 . . . Jeff Strunk, the 2004 NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series Modified Champion at Grandview Speedway, survived more than a dozen cautions and a "hot foot" to win the 30-lap Open Competition Modified feature race at Grandview Speedway on Saturday night. And it was Brian Shuey leading all the laps to win the 20-lap Open Competition Late Model stock car feature race.

It took two cautions to get the 30-lap Modified feature started and Strunk, who calls Bethel, PA home, was able to charge to the front of the 28-car starting field with Mike Gular close behind. And that was pretty much the story of the race as Strunk lead all the laps to bring the BPG Racing/Chad Sinon Motorsports entry home first and pick up the $2200 first place money. At the midway marker the race was restarted single file after a caution and the final laps were run without incident. Strunk ran the final 10 laps with hot steering fluid on his leg and in his shoe causing him to suffer some minor leg burns.

Gular (Harleysville), who will be Strunk’s teammate next season in a two car BPG Racing/Chad Sinon Motorsports team, was able to close on Strunk, even challenge him a couple of times, but had to settle for second. Third spot went to Keith Bright bill (Mohnton) followed by Jon Kellner Sr. (Lansdale) and Meme DeSantis (Temple).

The 20-lap Late Model feature had Brian Shuey(Hamburg) taking the lead at the drop of the green and having a relative easy time of it as he rode to a comfortable win…..leading all the laps. Young Mike Kellner, a 16 year old high school student from Lansdale, was able to come home with a strong second place finisher while veteran racer Lee Miller (New Tripoli) finished third. Four time track late model champion Dean Stoudt earned fourth while visitor Dave Zona was fifth.

The open competition format of the show did attract a large number of visitors giving fans an opportunity to see some unique driving styles and some interesting race cars.

Qualifying heat races for the Modifieds went to Jeff Strunk, Keith Brightbill, Mike Gular and Craig VonDohren while Bobby Gunther Walsh and Ray Swinehart won the consolation races. Jeff Strunk won the Cheers Tavern Cash Dash worth $350.

For the Late Models qualifying races were won by Mike Kellner, Brian Shuey and Greg Hoffmaster. Lou Egrie won the consolation race and it was Brian Shuey getting the Jim Brown Cash Dash victory.

Next event on the schedule is the Halloween Thunder Celebration on Saturday, October 16th, 6 p.m. The event will include features only (25 laps each) for NASCAR Modifieds, NASCAR Late Models, DIRT Southeast Series Modifieds, URC Sprints and Legends. In addition there will be a special race for URC sprint non-feature winners and there will be an exhibition of vintage race cars.

On Saturday, October 23rd, 7 a.m. the annual Grandview Speedway Racer’s Flea Market will be presented in the speedway pit area. For information telephone 610.754.7688.

Already plans for the 2005 season are being discussed with the annual practice day tentatively scheduled for the last Saturday in March, (March 26th) 2005 with opening day to follow for the NASCAR Modifieds and Late Models on Saturday, April 2nd. Patriot Bank will sponsor the opening night show. Several events already have sponsorship support but opportunities do exist for sponsorship of race events, billboard advertising and track magazine advertising.
