SCHAFFER NEW MODIFIED WIN LEADER AT GRANDVIEW AND CHRIS SHUEY GETS HIS THIRD WIN OF THE SEASON IN LATE MODELS

BECHTELSVILLE, PA June 19, 2004 . . . The man some call the “Dean of Modifieds at Grandview Speedway” Rick Schaffer drove the Bud Stone owned Ford powered Speed Palace Modified stock car to victory in the 30-lap NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series Modified feature race at Grandview Speedway on Saturday night. And in the 20-lap main event for NASCAR ShorTrack Late Models the win went to Chris Shuey in his Harry’s U-Pull-It Auto Parts No. 21 for the third time this season.

The Zuber Realty sponsored Modified feature saw Bobby Trapper charge to the front at the drop of the green but the lead was short-lived as Kyle Weiss, coming from third starting spot, got the top spot on the fourth circuit of the one-third-mile, clay banked oval. Weiss kept the Schaeffer’s Harley Davidson #21K in front until the 12th lap when Schaffer (Woxall) was able to move to the front of the field. Once in front Schaffer had his hands full as current point leader Craig VonDohren, a two feature winner, was right on his rear. For the final 10 laps it was a nip-and-tuck battle with Schaffer able to edge out VonDohren (Oley) for the victory. The win put Schaffer on top as the all-time leading Modified feature winner with 51 career victories. Second spot went to VonDohren followed by Doug Manmiller (Wyomissing) for one of his best efforts of the season. Fourth went to Jon Kellner Sr. (Lansdale), a two feature winner, followed by former track champion Terry Meitzler (Kutztown).

“We tried something new tonight. It was a setup that we had never used before and it seemed to work. We still have a long way to go though,” said Schaffer in victory lane.

Mike Steinmetz, who had not been to victory lane in 23 years, put his Johnny & Hons Restaurant #91 in front of the pack at the drop of the green and kept it there for 17 laps. The veteran racer, he got out of the sport for a few years, held off some very serious efforts by Lee Miller, Junior Grebe and others but with three laps to go saw Chris Shuey charge past him in the second turn on the outside.

Steinmetz did not make it easy for Shuey as he kept the pressure on. However with just two laps to go Steinmetz and Randy Stoudt got into an incident in turn four with Steinmetz almost losing control of his car and Stoudt spinning.

At the finish of the 20-lap main event Shuey (Orefield) was in front by a narrow margin over Lee Miller (New Tripoli). Ron Kline (Salfordville) charged into third on the final lap while Steinmetz (Douglassville) finishe fourth and Steve Sennott (Gilbertsville) gained a fifth place finish.

Qualifying heat races for the Modifieds were won by Kyle Weiss, Craig VonDohren, Keith Brightbill and Jeff Strunk. The consolation racers were won by Jason Smythe and Mike Bailey. The Cheer’s Tavern Cash Dash worth $330 went to VonDohren.

In the Late Model qualifying heat races the wins were earned by Lee Miller, Chris Shuey and Junior Grebe. One of the most exciting events of the night was the three lap Jim Brown Cash Dash with Junior Grebe, Chris Shuey and Lee Miller battling side-by-side for the victory. The strongest of the group proved to be winner Junior Grebe.

At intermission all the Late Model racers presented Jim Brown, sponsor of the Cash Dash for Late Models this season, with a beautiful award along with a $100 gift certificate for his favorite restaurant. It was their way of saying thank you for all the support Mr. Brown has given the Late Model this season.
