MARSHALL CEMENTS WIN ON COUNTY CONCRETE NIGHT AT LEBANON VALLEY
CHECKERS ALSO TO GOEWEY AND HENCKE
By Ed & Betty Biittig
August 7, 2004, West Lebanon, NY- Eddie Marshall of Pound Ridge, NY started the main event in sixth position and by lap 10 was chasing leader Brian Berger for the top spot. The two ran side by side for two laps before Marshall took the lead. Although lap traffic was tough it only slowed Marshall momentarily as he moved on to the checker at Lebanon Valley Speedway on Saturday night in the 30-lap Modified main event.
“The TEO Chassis and Enders engine ran perfect, said Marshall in victory lane. I knew Andy Bachetti would be knocking on the door so I knew I had to keep pushing in the final laps.” As for his chances at the point title, he said, “there are at least five guys that are tough and running in the top five in points.” Marshall gained 12 points on point leader Hearn who finished fifth.
County Concrete of Dalton, Massachusetts and GE Plastics of Pittsfield, Massachusetts sponsored the night of racing that included the ACOT antique racers in a 5-lap exhibition in which Lou Frey was the winner.
K.C. Goewey took the checker for the sixth time this season in the Sportsman main event. Goewey’s car was under protest at the end of the night and at press time results for the Sportsman main were still unofficial.
Buddy Hencke recorded his third win in the Pro Stock division. The win in the held over Pure Stock event from July 31st went to Pete DeFiglio. Other Pure Stock winners were Bill Wood, Bob Hammell, Jesse Murphy and John Routhier.
The final event of the night was the rollover contest and Kevin Hilt took home the win with 15 points for a triple roll.
The 30-lap Modified feature came to the green with Brian Berger and John Hewitt on the front row of the 33-car field. With only one lap complete the yellow flew for the No. 27 of Dave McFeeters. Under yellow Hector Stratton and Dave Leckonby both went to the pits, Stratton with a flat tire and Leckonby with a radiator problem on his new Bicknell chassis No. 66.
On the restart Matt Quinn who began the event in eighth drove to the low side and made his way into third in the Ron Dwyer back up No. 88. On the next caution Rich Ricci, Jr. went to the pits for attention from his crew to the front end of his No. 55. By the time the leader was in turn three, Marshall passed Hewitt on the backstretch for second. A race for seventh was now shaping up between, Bachetti, Tremont and Hearn. Bachetti got the spot before another lap was complete.
In the meantime, Eddie Marshall cranked up his No. 98 Marshall Oil machine and chased Berger for the lead. The two raced side by side down the front chute and around the track until Marshall took the lead on lap ten.
Point leader Hearn moved into the top ten on lap eleven and now had the Quinn No. 88 in his sights. Marshall extended his lead over Berger at the halfway point. Marshall now was looking at lap traffic just ahead. It only temporarily slowed his momentum, as he was able to maneuver his way through and around the slower cars.
On lap 22 Marshall encountered three lap cars that caused him to lose his comfortable lead. Bachetti was now in second and moving in on Marshall. However, the same three lap cars slowed Bachetti, also. Bachetti continued his march toward Marshall but was not able to run down Marshall before the checker flew.
Modified heat wins went to Rob Pitcher, Brian Berger, Wayne Jelley and Donnie Corellis.
The Sportsman action began with Chad Pierce and Hawley Smith leading the field to the green for the start of the 20-lap main event, signaling the final checker of the night. Chad Pierce showed the way around for the first circuit.
On the restart after the first caution, Art Collins moved into second. Collins moved by leader Pierce on the next lap to take the lead. Collins continued to lead as Sportsman point leader, K. C. Goewey moved into third on lap five from his 15th starting position. Pierce held onto third for just one more lap over Goewey but was not able to outrun Goewey’s powerful No. 2. As Goewey moved into the runner up spot Collins was a full straightaway ahead. Collin’s comfortable lead diminished when the yellow flew on lap seven. This put Goewey along side for the restart and as the two came to the green flag.
On the ninth lap, 2003 Sportsman Rookie, Kyle Hoffman made a run for the fifth spot challenging Bobby Knipe. Hoffman prevailed until the next lap when Knipe came back to take the spot. In the meantime, Collins and Goewey were battling on the front and came to the line side by side on lap 15. Goewey took the lead from Collins on the next lap and pulled away. Lorne Browe now sat third, with Bobby Knipe fourth and Hawley Smith fifth. Goewey took the checker for his second win in a week and his sixth of the season.
Jeff Watson, Kyle Hoffman and Brian Sandstedt won Sportsman qualifying events.
Kevin Arnold led the first lap of the Pro Stock feature. With only three laps in the books a four-car melee in turn one brought out the caution. Arnold held the lead on the restart. Buddy Hencke took the lead on lap four and Arnold dropped back to second. Next came the No. 54L of Jim Langenback running a strong third.
By the halfway point, Langenback passed Arnold for second and focused his attention on Hencke in the top spot.
With only five laps remaining, Langenback closed in on Hencke. Moving to the high side the veteran ran a smooth line up top but lost ground in turn three. He was never able to get closer than a car length behind Hencke until the final lap when he dropped low and then shot to the high side in a final attempt to beat Hencke to the checker.
