SHELDON & CORELLIS SPLIT MOD TWIN BILL AT LEBANON VALLEY

West Lebanon, NY-Twin 20-lap features for the modifieds highlighted the card at Lebanon Valley Saturday night. Guy Sheldon was the winner of the first 20-lap feature and Donnie Corellis was victorious in the second feature. K.C. Goewey made a last lap pass to win his second 20-lap sportsman feature of the season. Buddy Hencke made his return to the Valley profitable by winning the 20-lap pro stock feature. Other winners on the night included Frank Boucher in the rookie pro stocks and Jon Routhier, Pete DeFiglio, Don Collins and Jason Casey in the pure stocks. A special thanks to Sheldon Oil Services and Bilinski Sausage Manufacturing Company for sponsoring the card.

The first 20-lap modified feature got off to a very poor start with a chain reaction ten car crash in turn one. About half of the cars did return to the race. When the race finally resumed Guy Sheldon was the leader in the Bob Devine owned #42. Rob Pitcher and Donnie Corellis rounded out the top three early in the race. Brett Hearn was in sixth position by lap eight. It was not a good night for Kenny Tremont. He had engine problems in his primary car during his qualifying race and had to go to his back-up car. He failed to finish in the top fifteen. The best race on the track in the late stages of the race was for fourth. Rich Ricci Jr and Hearn fought tooth and nail for the position. Hearn did edge Ricci at the line for that position.

Sheldon was strong to the challenge and won his third career modified victory at Lebanon Valley. "Is that black cloud finally gone?" Sheldon said looking up in victory lane. Sheldon picked a good night to win seeing as his family’s business was one of the night’s primary sponsors. Pitcher had a strong second place finish while Corellis rounded out the podium in third.

The second 20-lap feature was able to get off on a much better start with the first caution period of the race not coming out until lap five. Tremont continued to struggle as something in the drive train broke sending him pitside. A multiple car incident on the restart gave the Tremont crew a chance to repair the damage without losing a lap. Tremont would finish just inside the top ten. At the front of the pack it was all Dave Leckonby. He was looking to get rid of his own "black cloud" that has plagued his efforts in 2004. Corellis was looking to improve on his third place finish in the first race. He moved passed Mel Schruffer for second place on lap 12. Corellis caught Leckonby and made the pass for the lead on lap 17. Hearn moved passed Schruffer into third with two laps to go. Corellis cruised home for the victory and was very happy in victory lane.

It would have been easier to measure the length of the 20-lap sportsman feature with a calendar instead of a watch on Saturday night. Several extended caution periods in the first half of the feature led to the long duration of the race. Art Collins was caught up in one of the early incidents and finished tenth. Ryan Larkin had several problems and was out on the sixth lap. Sophomore driver and 2003 rookie of the year, Kyle Hoffman looked like he was on his way to his first career victory. He led nineteen laps of the race, but lost the lead to K.C. Goewey on the final lap to give Goewey his second win of the season. Hoffman did finish second for his best career finish. Don Miller had a strong third place run with Frank Harper fourth and last week’s winner, Jeff Watson rounding out the top five.

Paul Rogers led the first five laps of the 20-lap pro stock feature; Buddy Hencke took the top position away on lap six. Danny Sanchez got spun around on the frontstretch on lap six while going for fifth position. Some great racing in the final stages of the race for the win. Rob Yetman threw everything he had at Hencke without knocking him out of the lead. The two raced hard, but clean and had the fans on their feet in the final laps. Hencke proved his mettle by holding off the hard-charging Yetman for the victory. Paul LaRochelle was also a threat in the final stages and finished third.

Lebanon Valley is right back in action next Saturday June 5th as Williams Lumber and Wohrle’s Meat Products present a full card with all classes in action plus a 358-Modified Sunoco/Aplus Syracuse Qualifier.
