Sarver, PA...July 30, 2004
It was "family night" at Lernerville Speedway Friday evening as the Hubbard, Ohio father-son team of Jim Weller Jr and Jimmy Weller III both captured feature events in respective divisions; Weller Jr scored his third Ferrante Motor Cars Modified win and it was a career first for the jubilant 18 year-old Weller III in the St. Barnabas Health System Sprints. Former 1990 Champion Ron Davies garnered his second 2004 Friedman's Supermarkets/Bi-Lo Foods Late Model victory. It was a "star spangled" night for Dave Spangler as he seized a coveted career first in the Dingbat Restaurant Pure Stocks main event. It was Friedmans/Supermarkets/Bi-Lo Foods night at the speedway.
Jim Weller Jr scored another triumph in the 20-lap Ferrante Motor cars Modifieds. Weller made the winning move on lap two after passing leader Tommy Marshall. Weller drove an outstanding race and repelled all attempts from second place finisher Kevin Bolland and point leader Dave Murdick. Weller said, "It is a tough group to race against." Weller Jr's Liberty Steel #31 has 9 top four feature finishes and this one is his 28th win, tying him with the late Dick Rankin for sixth on the All Time Modified Win List. Marshall eventually dropped to fourth place and was followed by Tom Winkle, Mark Flick, Mike Sutton, Josh Skarzenski, Carl Murdick, and John Durci. Bolland and Weller won the heat races
It was a career first win for young Jim Weller III in the 22-lap St. Barnabas Health System Sprints. Although Weller III drove a Modified for two years, he switched divisions in 2004 and is now a rookie Sprint car driver. In his April debut at the track, Weller III struggled. He rolled his Sprint end over end down the front chute. In his next outing Weller III crashed into the front wall. But the teenager persevered and it paid off with a stunning upset victory over seasoned veteran Ed Lynch Jr. At the start of the feature, before a lap was recorded, a five car collision occurred for Matt Kriess, Dan Shetler, Jack Sodeman Jr, Dave Jones, and Ed Lynch Jr. Shetler, Sodeman Jr, and Lynch Jr were able to continue. When the race restarted Weller's Mac Tools/Project Management Services/J&J Auto Racing #23 quickly darted into the lead with Rod George and Kevin Schaeffer following him. Lap after lap Weller III did an admirable job of driving and staying focused on his line. By circuit nine the battle for second began between Rod George and Lynch Jr., who were both whizzing through lapped traffic. On lap 19 the yellow flag was thrown for the spinning sprints of Rob Kohan and Terry Bowser that came to a halt in turn three. Weller III had a sizeable straight-away lead erased. When the race resumed Ed Lynch Jr passed Rod George for the second spot and plotted his attack on Weller III. The track rule states that when a caution occurs on the white flag lap, two more laps will be run. On the 20th lap, Terry Bowser's #59 connected with another car and violently flipped in turn four. When the race resumed Weller III immediately shot into the lead, remained poised, focused, and ran two perfect laps to defeat the veteran Lynch Jr. to the amazement of the fans. In victory lane Weller said, "It has always been a goal of mine to win when Dad does and here we are!" When asked about all the caution events Weller III said, "It was nerve wracking with him (Lynch) back there, but my crew just told me to hit my line and he'd have to do something real good." What made it even more historical was the fact that this is the fourth father and son team to win on the same night in 37 years at Lernerville. The last was Craig and the late Dick Rankin in 1995 and others were Bob Wearing Jr and Sr, and Lou and Dale Blaney. Kevin Schaeffer won the battle for third over Rod George. Chad Hill claimed fifth and was trailed by Arnie Kent, Dan Shetler, Scott Priester, Butch Beasley and Brent Matus. Lynch Jr, Hill and Weller III won the heat events. Note: Terry Bowser was flown to Presbyterian Hospital where he is being kept for observation. Fortunately it was reported that Bowser did not sustain any fractured bones, but the doctors were still conferring on the other tests administered.
Former 1990 track Champion Ron Davies was in the Friedman's Supermarkets/Bi-Lo Foods winner's circle for the second time this season. Leading from flag to flag after starting on the front row, the skilled Davies used the inside line to dominate the event. On lap 12, Lynn Geisler, who started tenth, passed Mike Johnson for second and made his charge at Davies. Neither runner-up Geisler nor Johnson had enough horsepower to catch Davies, who powered his way to a career sixth by 10 lengths at the checker. Davies said, "I felt the bottom was a little better; there was all kinds of traction and you could run wide open. The race track was great tonight." He further added, "I want to thank my sponsors Erie's Texas Roadhouse Rob, Dave Grady, Dan Horton Drilling, Northern Tier Water Hauling, Shane Dunn and my crew." Since Davies has a four hour tow to the speedway, it has been more than a decade since he has been a regular at the track, but in four visits he has two 1sts and two 2nds. He is practicing for the WoO show on August 13th. Davies said, "The best of the best will be here." Fourth through tenth spot went to Nick Jones, Bob Wearing Jr, Chuck Kennedy, Dan Swartzlander, Keith Zimmerman, Matt Gaston and Matt Lux. Point leader and heat race victor John Flinner was involved in an early accident in the feature. Nick Jones and Ron Davies also scored in the prelims and Dutch Davies was the winner of the B-Main.
Dave Spangler drove an outstanding race to win his first ever 15-lap Dingbat Restaurants Pure Stock main event. On lap two, Spangler's #20 Spangler Brothers Paving racer came from third to secure the front spot from Rob Shook. With composure and precision skills, he kept control the distance, despite continuous pressure from runner-up Greg Beach, Paul Schreckengost, Rob Shook, and Mike Pegher respectively. A ninth lap caution event tightened the field, but on the restart Spangler put the hammer down and was not to be denied as he increased his lead to four car lengths at the checkered flag. Sixth through tenth spot went to Mike Turner, Butch Lambert, Scott Bochek, Jeff Bastin, and Jake Ayers. Heat winner and point leader Joe Kelley left the race on lap seven with mechanical problems, but still holds a 24 digit lead over Rob Shook in the Budweiser Point Standings. Beach and Lambert also scored in the prelims and Wayne Carbo won the B-Main. Nick Reges was the Stover-Net Connection Hard Charger.
