MAHANEY, TITUS, MILLS, KENNEDY, DECKER, WARNER, LANDERS AMONG WINNERS AT FIVE MILE PONT on KREUTZ INCORPORATED NIGHT.
Kirkwood, NY… Mike Mahaney made a rare appearance Saturday at Five Mile Point Speedway. The late decision proved to be the right one as Mahaney charged from 12th to pick up his first Five Mile Point win since 2013. After a challenging start to the 2019 season, Kirkwood’s Todd Titus notched his first career Five Mile Point Insinger Performance Sportsman feature win. Buck Mills Sr returned to victory lane after a last lap pass in the Factory Stock division, while defending track champion Nick Kennedy notched a win in the Belgray Oil 4 Cylinder Expert class. Matt Warner was victorious in the XCEL 600 tour race, with Walter Decker and Joshua Landers finding their way to victory lane as well.
George Hildebrant and Aleia Geisler brought the Sunoco Modified field to the green flag where Hildebrant quickly jumped out to the advantage. In the opening laps, Hildebrant opened up a three car advantage while Geisler began the chase in second. Steve Babicek quickly picked off two cars as he moved up from fifth to third on the grid just three laps into the main event. The race remained green until the first caution flag flew on lap 7 as Geoff Quackenbush collided with a Yuke tire causing his front end to collapse. As the race returned to green, Hildebrant once again jumped out to the advantage while Babicek made a move on the outside to get past Geisler for second. The caution flag was displayed again on lap 9 bringing the field to a halt. When the field came back to the green flag, Hildebrant continued to lead while Mike Mahaney moved into second with Babicek, Geisler, and Brad Weaver completing the top 5. On the ensuing restart, Hildebrant elected to take the inside groove leaving the top side for Mahaney. As the lead duo raced into turn on, Mahaney made a power move on the top shelf to grab the lead from Hildebrant. As the race approached the mid way point, the top three remained the same while Dan Creeden began to show his speed moving into fourth from his 17th starting position. Brad Szeluwski was on the move as well as he followed Creedeen to the front racing his way to fifth by lap 15.
As the second half of the race began, Mahaney distanced himself from Hildebrant as he switched lanes and worked the inside of the speedway. Hildebrant maintained second with Babicek in third until lap 19 when Creeden made his way by to grab third. Creeden quickly went to work on Hildebrant with his sights set on second. On the 22nd circuit, Creeden rolled the inside of the speedway and worked past Hildebrant to grab second. Nick Rochinski began to show speed in the closing stages as he raced his way into 5th in an effort to charge to the front. The field was halted once more on lap 26 as a slowing Scott Landers brought the field to a caution. The ensuing restart found Mahaney leading with Creeden, Babicek, Szulewski, and Rochinski rounding out the top 5. As the field came back to green, Mahaney quickly pulled a two car length advantage over Creeden, while Rochinski made a nice move to pass two cars moving into third. Creeden tried everything up his sleeve to get by Mahaney, but Mahaney had the car dialed in en route to his first win in over five years. As the checkered flag flew, Mahaney held on for the win while Creeden, Rochinksi, Babicek, and Szulewski rounded out the top 5.
Randy Brokaw and Bubba Heskel brought the Insinger Performance Sportsman field to the green flag where Brokaw powered out to the initial advantage. By the second circuit, Todd Titus quickly made his way by Heskel for second with Randy Fox following behind to grab third. The first caution flag flew on lap 4 for a multi car incident. On the ensuing restart, Brokaw again jumped out to the lead over a close following Titus. Titus began to pressure for the race lead in the next few laps until the field was halted once more for a caution on lap 8. As the field lined up double file for the restart, Titus drove the car deep into turn one before eventually grabbing the lead on the ninth circuit. As Brokaw fell back into second, Fox continued to run third with Blaine Klinger moving into fourth and Corey Cormier rounding out the top 5. As the race continued, Titus proved to be the car to beat as he opened up a multi car advantage over the field. As the field came around to get the parallel sticks, the caution flag flew for the final time stopping the action on lap 18. On the final restart, Titus once more jumped out to the lead holding Brokaw at bay. When the checkers flew over the field it was Titus holding on for his first career Five Mile Point Insinger Performance Sportsman victory. Friends and family joined an enthusiastic Titus in victory lane as he got “the monkey off his back” after a tough start to the 2019 campaign. Brokaw, Fox, Klinger, and Cormier completed the top 5.
In the Factory Stock feature, Buck Mills Sr needed all 15 laps to get his way into victory lane. Tommy Groover grabbed the lead following a lap 6 restart and looked to run away from the field. With the final caution coming out on lap 12, Mills’ eyes lit up as he had the chance to restart on the back bumper of Groover. In the closing laps Groover maintained the top spot until Mills made a last lap pass to grab the victory in the 22 car strong Factory Stock feature.
Defending track champion Nick Kennedy also needed all 15 laps to find his way back into victory lane in the Belgray Oil 4 Cylinder Expert main event. Josh Wilder led nearly half of the feature until Brian Salmini slipped by to grab the top spot on lap 8. Salmini maintained the top spot for two laps until a hard charging Kennedy snuck by on the 10th circuit. Kennedy held on to lead the final five laps landing himself back into victory lane.
Billy Colwell looked strong in the Belgray Oil 4 Cylinder novice feature as he led the opening 5 laps. John Maynard took the advantage after making contact with Colwell on lap 6. Maynard led the closing 6 laps but was later penalized at the finish giving the win to Walter Decker.
A great field of XCEL 600cc Modifieds were on hand to tackle the quarter mile oval. Matt Warner bested the field en route to his first career win at Five Mile Point. Warner held of challenges from Ray Gradwell as he raced his way into victory lane at Five Mile Point.
Joshua Landers led every lap en route to another victory in the Jr Xcel division over Avery Decker.
