CLAPPERTON, SLACK AND SMITH TAKE FAIR WINS
A standing room only crowd on Ellinwood Auto Parts night witnessed Mike Clapperton taking his first 358 Sportsmen - Modified feature win of the year and Herm Slack and Gary Smith each taking their second checkers in a row. The Afton Fair was the backdrop for the nights action with full fields in all three divisions.
Mike Clapperton took the lead on the final restart of the feature and led the remaining 21 laps to take his first win of 1993. Clapperton took the lead from Mike Baldwin and built a near straightaway lead before coming into lapped traffic. Six time feature winner Mitch Gibbs got caught in a early race jam coming out of turn two and had to go to the rear. Fighting through traffic, Gibbs was able to recover to finish second. J.R. Hurlburt finished a strong run coming across the line in third. Jamie Page and Howard Singer rounded out the top five.
In the Street Stock feature Herm Slack took the lead from Ed Ward Jr. on the 4th lap and held off the persistent charges of Gary Roberts to take his second consecutive feature win. Al Macrabie, current point leaders, crossed the line in third with Tim French and Steve Alger fifth.
Gary Smith picked up his second consecutive 4 Cylinder street stock feature win while subbing for Russell Hendrickson. Dave Jaindl took the lead from Ralph Jennings on lap 2 and had Fred Barse on his rear bumper on the way by. Barse continued to pressure Jaindl with Smith watching from third place.
As the two leaders came out of turn four with 2 laps to go Jaindl and Barse came together allowing Smith enough room to take the 21 Jr. into the lead for good. Jaindl held on for second with Fred Barse third, Randy Haynes fourth and Jon Kostbar fifth.
