Card Deals Street Stock Shutout

Gibbs Streak Snapped at 8

Gary Card drove to two Street stock checkered flags, while Mike Clapperton snapped Mitch Gibbs win streak in the Modified nightcap on an action filled OG Grocery/Pole Position Nascar Store Night at Afton Raceway Park. Gary Smith took the win in the regularly scheduled 4-Cylinder Feature while Joe Scofield took the curfew abbreviated Pure Stock checkers. Mitch Gibbs night was not a total loss as the defending track champion picked up the Midseason Championship checkered flag early in the evening.

The action started with the rained out Street Stock Midseason Championship. The 25 lap feature

started with Don Newell Jr. taking the early lead. A caution for a heavy smoking Boyd Carlyle on the

second lap brought on the restart that Gary Smith used to take the lead coming off turn four. On lap

10 Newell slowed on the backstretch eventually bringing out the caution, putting Butch Klinger in

second with Skip French in third, Gary Roberts in fourth and Gary Card in fifth. After three tries at

restarting the race proved futile the fouth time worked as Gary Card swept past Gary Roberts to move

into third spot on lap 12. At the halfway point of the race, Gary Smith continued to lead with Gary

Card running in second and Gary Roberts in third. Gary Card moved to the lead outrunning Smith

down the backstretch on the 14th lap. Roberts then moved under Smith on lap 17 to take second.

With five laps remaining the caution came out setting up the shoot out to the finish. Roberts and

Smith battled back and forth for second. At the checkers Gary Card picked up the Midseason

championship with Gary Smith finishing in second, Gary Roberts took third. Butch Klinger and Jeff

Norton rounded out the top five. Duane Hiller took the early lead in the 30 lap Midseason Championship for Modifieds. Hiller's lead was short lived as Wink Hinkley moved into the lead on the third lap. With Hinkley leading Mike Clapperton and J.R. Hurlburt battled for second place. By lap 7 Robbie Green had moved into fourth spot and began to pressure the leaders. On a lap 8 restart Hurlburt moved inot the lead while Green moved into third. By lap 11 Green moved into second and challenged Hurlburt for the lead. On lap 16 Green made the pass for the lead but Hurlburt came back two laps later to retake the lead. On lap 19 Clapperton moved back into second and set his sights on the leader. Mitch Gibbs had worked his way through the field after a lap 13 tangle and moved past Clapperton on lap 23 and made the pass for the lead on the next lap. At the checkers it was Mitch Gibbs taking his 8th consecutive win, Mike Clapperton took second with J.R. Hurlburt, Jamie Page and Wink Hinkley rounding out the top five.

In the regularly scheduled 20 lap Street Stock Feature Tim French pulled out to the early lead. By lap 4 Gary Roberts had moved into second and started working for the lead. Roberts time at the front was short lived as a lap six restart jam up collected Roberts, Gary Card, Gary Smith, Butch Klinger and others. When the race restarted on lap 6 Boyd Carlyle was in second and Denny Smith was running third. The front running jinx continued as Denny Smith spun out on the 12th lap. Now it was Steve Alger's turn to take a crack at French. Alger took the low groove and raced side by side with French for the lead. On lap 17 Gary Card moved past Alger for second. Alger and Gary Roberts then put on a side by side battle for third while Card went after French for the lead. Roberts moved into second on a restart. With two laps to go Card made the pass for the lead going down the back stretch. At the flag Gary Card won his second feature of the night. Tim French held on for second with Steve Alger third. Gary Roberts broke in turn two after taking the white flag eventually finishing in tenth. Steve Alger, Ed Ward Jr. and Rodney Harris rounded out the top five.

Rich Rought took the early lead in the 15 lap Four Cylinder Feature. Dave Burnett put on an early charge moving into third place on lap 4 and then into the number two spot on lap 5. Gary Smith then came through the field and past Burnett for second on lap 7. Burnett pitted on the eighth lap and Smith started racing Rought for the lead. On the 11th lap Smith made the pass for the lead on a restart and held on to take the win. Rich Rought held on for second, with Jamie Hurlburt third, Dennis Kirk fourth and Bob Baker fifth. Joe Scofield took the Pure Stock Feature in a curfew shortened 6 lap event. Early leader Bill

Bunzey gave way to Don Hart Jr. until Scofield took the lead on the second lap and held on for the

win. Jim Giles finished second, Jonathan LeFever finished third with Don Hart Jr. fourth and Mark

VanValkenburg fifth.
