Gibbs Dodges Bullett, Wins Sixth Straight

Mitch Gibbs, Gary Card, Ron Flannery, and Jim Giles All Take Feature Wins on July 1

Mitch Gibbs won his sixth straight modified feature but needed some luck to do it. Mike Clapperton suffered a broken radius rod and flat tire with the white flag in the air to give Gibbs the win. This was a race that saw the drivers pull out all the stops in an attempt to snap Gibbs winning steak. Jeff Sheeley took the lead from Earl Walrath on the third lap. While Sheeley led the race, the action was in the pack. Ron Ford jumped from 4th to 2nd between turns one and two, only to have J.R. Hurlburt slingshot past all three cars into second place coming off turn two. As the race wore on Clapperton, Gibbs, and Robbie Green worked their way through the field. Sheeley gave up the lead to Clapperton on the 14th lap. Gibbs had followed Clapperton through the field and a caution on the 22nd lap set up a three lap shootout to the finish. With 2 laps left Gibbs pulled alongside Clapperton through turns one and two but was unable to make the pass. Clapperton held the lead going into turns three and four when the bottom fell out. Gibbs made the pass coming off turn four and held on for the win. At the line it was Gibbs, Robbie Green - second, Jeff Shelley - third with Ron Ford - fourth and Jerry Northrup crossing in fifth. Clapperton finished in eighth.

Gary Card waited until the last lap to pass Boyd Carlyle and then held off a persistant Butch Klinger to take his first feature win of 1994. Carlyle held the early lead until Gary Roberts took charge on a lap 4 restart. Roberts held the lead until Carlyle regained the top spot on a lap 9 restart. Roberts lost the handle in turn two and dropped back in the field. By the halfway point it was a three car race with Carlyle leading, Gary Card running second and Butch Klinger in third. On the 19th lap Card dropped to the low groove and Klinger followed past Carlyle. On the last lap Klinger took his shot at Card coming off turn two but couldn't make the pass. Gary Card took his first win of the season with Butch Klinger taking a career best second place. Boyd Carlyle finished third with Jeff Norton and Joel Batzel rounding out the top five.

Ron Flannery pulled under Larry Darling on the last lap and took his first 4 Cylinder Street Stock feature win of 1994. Darling took the lead on the sixth lap from Joe Winans. Flannery moved past Winans for second on the 11th lap and set his sights on Darling. On the last lap defending 4 Cylinder track champion Ron Flannery made the pass and took the win. At the line it was Jamie Hurlburt in second, Larry Darling - third, Joe Winans fourth and Ralph Jennings - fifth.

Jim Giles took the lead on the second lap and never looked back as he ran away with the Pure Stock feature win. Don Hart Jr finished second, with Joe Scofield - third, Rick Brown - fourth, and Jonathan LaFever - fifth.
