For Immediate Release July 3, 2002
CLEARFIELD, PA - Sam Stile of Dunlevy won the inaugural “Throw of the Dice” Classic for Budweiser Late Models, before a near capacity crowd, Wednesday at Gamblers Raceway Park in Clearfield. Stile took home $4,250 for the win.
Other winners on Tim Bainey Racing Trophy night included: Lyle Sherwood of Ulysses in the Sids Subs Small Block Modifieds, Bob Conner of DuBois in the 84 Lumber Street Stocks and Gary Little of Woodland in the Fred Diehl of Philipsburg Pure Stocks.
Sam Stile and David Scott sat on the pole for the 50-lap event, with Stile taking the lead. While the Dunlevy driver led the race from green to checkered, he had heavy pressure Scott and Robbie Blair and Mike Blose, they both pitted with flat tires. Bobby Stokes worked his way to the third spot and set his sights on the front pair. As the leader entered lapped traffic, Scott and Stokes reeled him, but Stile worked the traffic and took kept the lead.
As the race wore on, it was still Stile and Scott with Russ Strouse, Brandon Wearing and Stokes fighting for the third spot. While the race continued, Dave Satterlee was working his way towards the front from 21st. He worked his way to the eighth spot when the race ended. As Mike Frisco waved the double checkered flags with Stile taking the win over Scott, with Stokes, Strouse and Wearing completing the top five. Heat wins went to Cody Schultz, Brandon Wearing and Bobby Stokes. Matt Gaston won the B-Main.
Lyle Sherwood and Tom Holden led the small block modifieds to the start with Sherwood taking the lead and bringing Mike Stine to second. The top two ran away from third place Faye Lumadue. The leaders were weaving in and out of lapped traffic as Stine tried every trick up his sleeve to gain the lead, but Sherwood did not relinquish the spot. Lumadue and Dion LaSalle battled for the third spot for the better part of the 25-lap event, the LaSalle went by Lumadue and assumed third. When the checkered flags fell it was Sherwood holding off Stine for the win, with LaSalle third, George Sankey from last to fourth and Mike Butterworth fifth. Sherwood and Sankey won the preliminaries.
The street stock feature saw Bob Conner and Dan Smeal on the front row with the pair drag racing to the first turn. It was Conner who came out with the lead and held Smeal off for the first portion of the feature, before Craig Lobb assumed the position. While Conner was leading, and Lobb was chasing, John Wayne Weaver was working his way from 19th toward the front. The final caution flew on lap 16 and Lobb gave it one more try, but could not muster the extra power to take the lead as Conner went to victory lane at GRP for the first time in 2002. Lobb was second ahead of Weaver, Pat Carfley and Tom Williams. Smeal, Conner and Carfley won the qualifying heats.
Bernie Whetstone and Gary Little lined up on the front row for the start of the pure stock feature, with Whetstone leading the first lap by a bumper of Little. Entering turn one, Little took the lead. As Little took the lead Sheddy Graham III moved to second and Whetstone move on top of the back stretch wall. He continued while Graham took the lead. Graham led until lap eight, when Little fought back and retook the top spot. Graham tried to work some magic, but Little was too tough as he took his third win of the season. Graham was second, with Jason Bainey was third, Frank Little was fourth and Gary McElheny was fifth. Whetstone and Little won the heats.
GRP LAST DEALS: 85 teams filled the pits including 27 late models, 19 modifieds, 22 street stocks and 18 pure stocks…Robbie Blair won the “Dash For the Cash” and threw two dice down the front stretch to see how many cars were inverted in the feature.
