STINER BECOMES SEVENTH DIFFERENT LM WINNER IN SEVEN RACES AT GRP

For Immediate Release June 1, 2002

CLEARFIELD, PA - Duane Stiner of Houtzdale, subbing for Cody Schultz, became the seventh different Budweiser Late Model feature winner in as many races Saturday night at Gamblers Raceway Park in Clearfield.
Ken Erskine of Mahaffey won his career first Denny's Beer Barrel Pub Four Cylinder Feature while the Fred Diehl of Philipsburg Pure Stock special went to Frank Little of Woodland.
Repeat winners were Jimmy Holden of Tiona in the Sids Subs Small Block Modifieds and Kip Charles of Clearfield in the 84 Lumber Street Stocks.
In the late model main event Louie Jacoby led Eric Moore into the first turn and began setting the pace. A pace that was changed on lap six by third place starter Duane Stiner. Once Stiner moved into the lead, he was in a world of his own, as he began to work lapped traffic. While Stiner was weaving his way to victory lane, the battle for second began to change, as teammates Jeff Henry and Brandon Wearing began to work over the #88 of Jacoby. Marc Whetstone got into the act and as the battle for second was decided at the line. Stiner took the win ahead of Wearing, Henry, Jacoby and Whetstone. Preliminary wins went to Dean Colbert and Jeff Henry.
For the second time in three weeks, seventeen-year old Jimmy Holden was learning what small block modified victory lane looks like. The young racer started on the pole with George Sankey and took the lead at the start, never relinquishing the position. Second was a tussle between Mike Stine and Bob Garvey, and Stine held off Garvey for the spot. As Mike Frisco waved the checkered flag it was all Holden with Stine second, Garvey third, Dion LaSalle fourth and Fay Lumadue fifth. Preliminary wins went to Garvey and LaSalle.
It was survival of the fittest in the street stock main event. Duane Kirk set the pace from his outside front row starting spot for two laps, beating Tom Homan to the front. Kirk led until lap two when Dan Smeal took the lead, but Smeal lost the handle and spun on lap 11. As the lead kept changing, now with Frank McVay on the point, Kip Charles was making his way from 13th. McVay led until lap 13 when handling problems sent him high in turn two, allowing Charles to take the lead and hold on for his second straight win and third of the season. Tom Williams, who spun early, worked his way to second from the rear. Smeal recovered for third, Craig Lobb was fourth and Kirk was fifth. Charles and McVay won the heats.
Newcomer Doug Updyke led Matt Wellar into the first turn to start the four-cylinder feature. Updyke set the pace for two laps before Ken Erskine came from third to take the lead. Cecilia Olson worked her way from fifth starting spot to second to give Erskine a run for his money, but when the checkered flag waved it was Erskine earning his first career win over Olson. Joe Leigey was third, with Updyke fourth and Dave Farrell fifth. Derek Rodkey and Olson split the heat wins.
Frank Little and Jason Bainey led the pure stocks to the start for their special with Little taking the lead and holding off all challengers, including his son, Gary. Frank Little went to the winners circle for the first time, holding the younger Little at bay, along with hard charging Scott Wagner in third, Harvey Wallbanger in fourth and Bernie Whetstone in fifth. Sheddy Graham III and Gary Little won the qualifiers.
