SCHAFFER AND GREBE WIN FEATURES AT GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY ON
SATURDAY
BECHTELSVILLE, PA JULY 17, 1999 . . . Veteran modified racing
talent Rick Schaffer wheeled the Philadelphia Inquirer/Al
Hamilton GMC Trucks sponsored entry to victory in the 30-lap
Jesse Baro Inc. NASCAR Modified feature race at Grandview
Speedway on Saturday night. The win, worth $2,200, was the
44th career win for Schaffer and moved him to within one of
equaling the career modified win mark held by his close
friend Fred Rahmer.
In victory lane Schaffer said, " It is never easy here
(winning). The track is tough, it beats up on you.
Everybody is tough here. If you get a win here, you are lucky."
And when asked about the possibility of equaling the
Rahmer win mark, Schaffer, always the diplomat, said, "It is
good to get close I guess. Fred only raced here a few years.
I guess I am going to die here someday. If he had raced here
as long as I have he would have that number way out of
reach. It is good to be getting that close to his record."
In the 20-lap NASCAR Late Model feature race Junior Grebe
of Boyertown, PA drove his Romeo's Candies/Ralph's Novelties
sponsored mount to his first win of the season and third of his career.
Bill Gensler motored his SnapOn Tools sponsored modified
to the front of the pack at the start and set the pace for 19
laps, an impressive effort. Rick Schaffer (Woxall) came from
ninth starting position to move in front of the pack, after
dueling with Gensler and Danny Erb for several laps, on the
20th lap. Once in front Schaffer was able to hold off
challenges from Mike Bailey, Danny Erb and Chip Slocum.
Late in the feature Danny Erb ended up in the third turn
wall putting him out after a very impressive effort in a
strange car. His first ride in the car owned by Todd Marburger.
At the finish it was Mike Bailey, just a few car lengths
behind Schaffer in second place. Third went to Chip Slocum
(Ewing Township, NJ) started in 22nd spot gaining 18
positions and earning the Timber Wolf Smokeless Tobacco Hard
Charger Award worth $200. In fourth spot was Kerry Kratz
(Bechtelsville) and fifth went to current modified point
leader Terry Meitzler (Fleetwood).
Though it sounds easy, it was not. Junior Grebe grabbed
the lead on the start and set the pace for the entire 20 lap
feature. However it was Bill Henning, Jeff Teets and John
Giesler giving Grebe fits and quite a run for the first place
money. Veteran Grebe was able to handle all challenges as the
late models put on an impressive display of racing for 20
laps with Grebe in front at the finish. Second spot went to
Jeff Teets (Coplay) followed by Bill Henning (Lansdale),
Randy Stoudt (Pottstown) and John Giesler (Aston).
Qualifying heats for the modifieds went to last week's
feature winner Ron Haring, Mike Bailey, Kerry Kratz and Shawn
Reimert. Consolation wins were earned by Jon Kellner and Chip
Slocum. And Ron Haring won the Cash Dash earning $340. In the
feature event Haring was out early with mechanical problems.
John Giesler, Junior Grebe and Dean Stoudt won the
preliminary events with the late models and Ed Trimbur won the consolation.

PIT NOTES: On hand for the Saturday night show was Vice
President of NASCAR Dennis Huth who is in charge of the
NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series and other traveling divisions.
The trucks were appearing at nearby Nazareth Raceway.
Jesse Baro Inc., sponsor for the night, made use of the
new Turn One Club which offers corporate hospitality in the
covered picnic area in turn one. Catering services are
available. Contact 610.754.7688. Great for employee nights,
birthday parties and more.
The track crew comes in for strong praise as they had the
track in great shape considering the heat, sun and drought
conditions. The temperature when racing started was close to
100 degrees. With the track pond low on water arrangements
had to be made to truck water from other sources to get the
track in shape. A tip of the hat to Bruce and Kenny Rogers, Mike Missimer,Paul Lorish and Kenny McMullen.
