MAYBERRY WINS TWO MOD FEATURES WHILE RANDY STOUDT TOPS LATE
MODEL FIELD AT GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY ON SATURDAY NIGHT
BECHTELSVILLE, PA JUNE 19, 1999 . . . It was Tom Mayberry
Night (not officially, it just seemed that way ) at Grandview
Speedway on Saturday night. The Sellersville, PA racer was
able to wheel the Mike Kelly owned A&T Chevy/Golden Corral
sponsored entry to victory in both 20-lap NASCAR Winston
Racing Series Modified features in addition to winning his
qualifying heat and the Cash Dash. It was the first time
since 1993 that a driver had won two features in one night
and the wins gave Mayberry a total of five for the season.
Randy Stoudt of Pottstown was able to share a little of the
spotlight by winning the 20-lap NASCAR Late Model feature,
his first of the season.
In the first 20-lap NASCAR Modified feature Jack
Hartnett set the pace for the first nine laps. On the 10th
lap Mayberry, who had started tenth, took command. Hartnett
was able to keep his Media Camping Center entry in the chase
for the victory but Mayberry was clearly the class of the
show as he had a fairly easy time earning the top prize.
Second spot went to Hartnett (Telford). Chip Slocum (Ewing
Township, NJ) was a strong challenger early but settled for
third followed by Jeff Strunk (Bechtelsville) and Donny Erb
(Douglassville). Erb ran the first half of the event in
second spot in a strong effort to get his second win of the season.
Veteran driver Jim Bagley, scheduled to start in the
feature, was taken to Lehigh Valley Medical Center
(Allentown, PA) complaining of chest pains. He was undergoing
open heart surgery as the night's races were being run.
In the 20-lap NASCAR Late Model feature Kyle Pensinger
was the leader for 12 laps. On the 13th lap with a three car
struggle going on between Pensinger, Randy Stoudt and Dean
Stoudt, Dean took command. And it looked as if multi time
champion Dean Stoudt would be able to hold on to grab the
victory. However in the first turn on the final lap Jeff
Teets, making a strong bid to unseat Stoudt tangled with the
leader and both were forced to go to the rear of the field.
On the restart Randy Stoudt, who had been patiently waiting
for his opportunity, was in front and held on to win. It was
the first win of the season for the Pottstown racer. Second
spot went to Lou Egrie (Philadelphia) followed by Kyle
Pensinger (Lyons Station), Rick Todorow (Quakertown) and Ed
Hoffman (Allentown).
The second 20-lap feature for NASCAR Modifieds had Kevin
Hartnett in front of the pack early. Tom Mayberry came from
15th starting spot, patiently working his way through the
field, and took command on the 12th circuit of the one-third-
mile, clay banked oval from Hartnett. However Mayberry had
his hands full holding off challenges from Rick Schaffer and
Jeff Strunk in the final laps. At the finish Schaffer
(Woxall) was right on the rear bumper of winner Tom Mayberry.
Jeff Strunk (Bechtelsville) managed a strong third place
finish and moved closer to point leader Terry Meitzler in the
chase for the track title and increased his lead in the chase
for the $40,000 Motor Truck Equipment Co. Cummins Kenworth PA
NASCAR Modified Championship Series point title. Kevin
Hartnett (Perkasie) held on for fourth followed by Keith
Hoffman (Allentown).
Qualifying heat races for the modifieds were won by
Kerry Kratz, Jim Bagley, Smokey Warren, Chip Slocum and Tom
Mayberry. Consolation races were taken by Kenny Gilmore, Jon
Kellner and Kenny Gruber. The Automotive Machining Services
Cash Dash, worth $350, went to Tom Mayberry. In qualifying
for the Late Models the wins went to Kyle Pensinger, Jeff
Teets and Ed Trimbur while the consolation was won by Ron Chrisman.
Keith Hoffman and Kenny Gilmore, unofficially, shared
the Timber Wolf Smokeless Tobacco Hard Charger Award for
gaining the most positions in the two feature events for
modifieds. And Sam Martz earned the Kochel Equipment First
Alternate Award for the modifieds.
NASCAR Modifieds and Late Models return for at least 13
events of racing on Saturday, June 26, 7:30 pm, part of
O'Conner Freightliner Night. And on Sunday, June 27, 7:30
p.m. the Keystone Pretzel PA Sprint Speedweek Series stops at
Grandview Speedway. 410 sprints will be featured in a $10,000
to win feature plus there will be racing for the KARS 358
sprint cars. Rain date is Monday, June 28, 7:30 p.m.
