SWINEHART AND TEETS WIN HATFIELD MEATS NIGHT FEATURES

BECHTELSVILLE, PA JULY 18, 1998 . . . Former track champion Ray Swinehart

drove the Golden Corral/Kountry Kitchen sponsored modified stock car to

victory on Saturday night in the 30-lap Hatfield Quality Meats NASCAR Modified

feature race at Grandview Speedway. The victory was the second of the season

for the Bechtelsville speed equipment business owner and moved him closer to

current point leader Terry Meitzler in the chase for the lucrative NASCAR and

track modified titles. In the companion 20-lap feature for NASCAR late model

stock cars Jeff Teets of Coplay, PA wheeled his Harry’s U-Pull It Auto

Parts/Kress Recycling mount to a decisive win giving him his second victory of

the season.

At the start of the 30-lap feature for NASCAR Winston Racing Series modifieds

Jim Stong, the pole sitter, lead the 29 car starting field into the first

turn. His lead was short lived as Tom Mayberry charged from fifth to first and

a multi car accident brought out the caution. On the restart Mayberry, at the

wheel of the Brinckman Coins entry, took control. However Ray Swinehart coming

from 11th starting slot moved up to challenge Mayberry for the top prize and

the twostaged a side-by-side battle for several laps. On the eighthlap

Swinehart got by Mayberry and current point leader Terry Meitzler headed for

the pits during a caution.

On the restart Swinehart continued to be the man to beat while Meitzler was

busy trying to work his way from the back as a result of his pit stop. With

two thirds of the race in the record book Swinehart had a commanding lead.

Kenny Gilmore, a strong challenger for the championship and the trip for two

to Maui that goes with the title, had tire problems while running third and

had to slow his pace considerably. Swinehart went on to win the $2,200 first

place offering. Tom Mayberry (Sellersville) grabbed second spot. Kevin

Hartnett (Perkasie) came from 18th to finish third battling Mayberry for

second. Glenn Strunk ( Boyertown) made another strong showing finishing fourth

followed by Dennis Bailey (Kutztown). If Mayberry had been able to win he

would have picked up additional cash for being able to win a heat, cash dash

and feature as part of the Cheer’s Tavern Clean Sweep Award.

The 20-lap Hatfield Quality Meats feature had Chris Wojnar on the pole but the

rear went out his car before the green was unfurled for the start. Jimmy

Meitzler Jr. brought the 26-car starting field to the green with Mark “The

Baker” Kropp getting the top spot on the second lap. Jeff Teets came from

fifth to challenge for the lead on the third lap and at the five lap marker

Teets was in front. Bill Henning gave Teets quite a challenge for the victory

for several laps but the Coplay racer was able to withstand the pressure and

ride to his second win of the season. Bill Henning ( Lansdale) earned a strong

second place finish with Jimmy Meitzler Jr. (Barto) getting third. Randy

Stoudt ( Pottstown) was fourth and Chuck Schutz (Pottstown) got fifth.

Qualifying heats for the NASCAR Winston Racing Series went to Shawn Reimert,

Tom Mayberry, Terry Meitzler and Sam Schoenly. The consolation races were won

by Rick Schaffer and Jack Hartnett. Schaffer’s car went up in flames as he

finished the consolation as a result of a power steering unit failure.

Schaffer was not injured, thanks to the quick work of the fire crew, but he

had to go to a “borrowed car” and start the feature from a provisional

starting position. Tom Mayberry won the Automotive Machining Services Cash

Dash worth $320.

In late model qualifying heat races wins went to Mark Kropp, Randy Stoudt and

Bill Henning while the consolation race victory was earned by defending

champion Lou Egrie.

Fans had the opportunity enjoy the fun of Smiley the Hatfield Quality Meats

mascot and to catch hot dogs (wrapped) being shot into the grandstands with a

“hot dog cannon.” A lucky fan went home with a Hatfield Quality Meats giant

cooler as the top prize winner.
