CHRISMAN AND SLOCUM ARE FEATURE WINNERS AT GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY
BECHTELSVILLE, PA July 5, 1998 . . . There were fireworks both on and off the
speedway on Sunday night at Grandview Speedway as the giant Schaeffer’s Family
Restaurant Firecracker 40 night saw Ron Chrisman win the Firecracker 40 NASCAR
Late Model classic and Chip Slocum take the top prize in the NASCAR Winston
Racing Series Modified feature. For Chrisman it was his first career feature
winner while for Slocum it was his second of the season. In addition to 17
events of stock car racing fans were treated to a spectacular Holiday
Fireworks show as part of the special Sunday night show.
A large crowd was on hand to see Jimmy Meitzler take the lead at the drop of
the green for the 26 car field in the Schaeffer’s Family Restaurant
Firecracker 40 Late Model Classic, the richest event of the season for the
late model racers. Meitzler’s lead was short lived as Steve Stump took control
on the third lap and seemed to be having an easy time of it. Stump was in
front until the 20th lap when he went wide in the second turn and Ron
Chrisman, who had challenged the leader for several laps, was able to take
over first place. Once in front of the field Chrisman was able to hold off a
strong late race challenge from John Durling to win his first career feature
victory and the richest late model race of the season. Chrisman, from
Limerick, driving his own Sportsline Track & Tennis Court Constructors
sponsored entry, was less than one car length in front of Durling at the
finish. Finishing behind Durling (Reading) was last year’s winner Randy Stoudt
of Pottstown followed by current point leader Chuck Schutz (Pottstown) and John Giesler (Lenni).
The 30-lap feature race for NASCAR Winston Racing Series Modifieds had Sam
Martz on the pole but Tom Mayberry was able to charge to the front at the drop
of the green. Mayberry had the Brinckman Coins sponsored modified in front of
the pack for much of the 30 lap main event as the 29 car starting field worked
at sort themselves out. At the midway point it was Mayberry with a comfortable
lead over Chip Slocum and Glenn Strunk. As Mayberry got caught up in slower
traffic Slocum reeled him in and with just six laps to go Slocum was able to
grab the top spot. Mayberry later dropped out with mechanical problems,
causing the only caution of the race, giving second spot to Glenn Strunk.
However at the finish Craig VonDohren, who had started 14th, was right on
Slocum’s rear bumper. Slocum (Ewing Township, NJ) and the Giel’s Automotive
team picked up $2200 for their winning efforts. Second spot went to VonDohren
(Barto) followed by Glenn Strunk (Boyertown), Rick Schaffer (Woxall) and Jeff
Strunk (Bechtelsville) coming from 15th spot. Terry Meitzler finished sixth
and retained the lead in the chase for the modified point title.
Qualifying heat races for the modifieds went to Ray Swinehart, Glenn Strunk,
Terry Meitzler, Jeff Strunk and Donny Erb. In the consolation races, close to
60 cars on hand, Doug Pannepacker, Danny Erb and Dave Faust were the winners.
And in the Automotive Machining Services Cash Dash the win went to Ray
Swinehart. Carl Ruppert earned the $25.00 Kochel Equipment First AlternateAward.
In late model preliminaries the victories were earned by Jimmy Meitzler, Jr.,
Steve Stump and Kyle Pensinger. The consolation races went to last week’s
feature winner Jeff Teets and Randy Stoudt. The Kochel Equipment Cash Dash for
late models was won by Jimmy Meitzler, Jr.
Terry Meitzler continues to be on top in the chase for the lucrative NASCAR
Winston Racing Series Modified point title. The Kutztown, PA racer has 3016
points leading former champion Ray Swinehart (Bechtelsville) who has 2947. In
third is Kenny Gilmore of Laureldale with 2747 followed by Glenn Strunk
(Boyertown) 2709 and Kerry Kratz (Bechtelsville) 2673. Only Kenny Gilmore in
the top five is without a victory. There have been 11 different feature
winners out of 14 feature races run for the NASCAR Modifieds.
In the NASCAR Late Models Chuck Schutz of Pottstown continues to lead the
standings with 2978 points. Former champion Dean Stoudt (East Greenville) is
second with 2831. In third is Junior Grebe ( Boyertown) holding 2768 points.
Randy Stoudt (Pottstown) has 2732 points to hold fourth spot followed by John
Durling ( Reading) with 2629. There have been 10 different feature winners this season.
In the PA. Dual Track NASCAR Modified Challenge Series Ray Swinehart continues
to be the man to beat. The Bechtelsville speed equipment and auto body shop
operator now has 5565 points. Dennis Bailey of Kutztown is second with 5080.
Bailey is without a feature win this season. Glenn Strunk (Boyertown) is third
with 5075 counters followed by Randy Bailey ( Kutztown) 5040 and Shawn Reimert
( Oley) 4935. The Dual Track Challenge incorporates modified events run at
both Big Diamond Raceway ( Friday nights ) and Grandview Speedway (Saturday
nights). The top point finishers will share in a $25,000 point fund.
NASCAR stock car racing returns to the Grandview Speedway on Saturday, July
11th at 7:30 p.m. At least 13 events of NASCAR Winston Racing Series
Modifieds and NASCAR Late Models will be featured. A 30-lap feature starting
29 modifieds tops the show. And there is a 20-lap feature starting 26 late
model stock cars. This will also be the final night for fans to purchase Kyle
Pensinger Raffle Tickets at just $1.00 each. There are some wonderful prizes
being given away as part of the raffle to raise money for the late model racer
who lost his home in a tornado in Lyons, Pa several weeks back. The raffle
drawing will take place at the speedway on Saturday night.
