PAINE REMAINS POINT LEADER WITH WIN IN TANEY MEMORIAL

CANANDAIGUA, NY...Waterloo, New York's Steve Paine maintained his stand on top of the DIRT Modified point race at the Canandaigua Speedway after winning the Taney Memorial 50 last Saturday evening. Joe Beyea became a first time winner at the speedway in the sportsman division, while Billy Brown, winless for many years, took home a victory in the Pro-stock division. Richard Briggs and Leroy Lewis each copped a 10-lap Street Stock feature.

Special Taney Dashes were also run with the winner of each receiving $100 and the rest of the dash cars $50 each. James Henry (Street Stock), Jon Miller (Pro-stock), Justin Haers (Sportsman) and Steve Paine (Modified) all won their respective Taney Dashes.

The 50-lap Taney Memorial saw Darryl Ruggles and Randy Miller bring the 25 car field down to take the green. Ruggles immediately used his pole starting position to his advantage, sailing off to a ten car lead over Vince Vitale, Miller, Chuck Hebing and Vic Coffey.

The first yellow flew on lap nine when Ed Monroe looped his number 4 in the first turn. Two laps later it would be Pat Ward's turn at spinning out, this time between turns three and four. Each restart Ruggles responded to the call and managed to build a lead.

Coffey took over second from Vitale on lap 13 and tried to start to chase down Ruggles. Monroe spun out again, this time on lap 19 to bring out the yellow. The restart saw Coffey's hopes go up in smoke as he lost a motor entering the third turn in a effort to catch Ruggles. This placed Vitale back in second followed by Danny Johnson, Billy Decker and Steve Paine.

On lap 22 Johnson, using an extremely high line around the oval, looped exiting the second turn and was able to gather his car back up. However the yellow had already been displayed bringing out the fifth caution of the race. Johnson exited to the pits and never returned to the race.

Steve Paine now found himself on the outside line next to Ruggles for the restart. Paine blasted into the lead and began turning 18 second laps. Ruggles began to fall back, losing second to Tim McCreadie on lap 28. Then on lap 33, Ruggles slowed to nearly a stop on the front straight to bring out the final yellow of the race.

This allowed McCreadie to pull up on the rear bumper of Paine. McCreadie then held tough chasing Paine around the oval. Decker and Gary Tomkins fell into a race of their own for third and fourth, while Ron Smoker ran a distant fifth.

On lap 42, McCreadie almost caught Paine in lapped traffic. Paine had to shoot low, while McCreadie went high making it four wide through turns three and four. Paine maintained his advantage by a front bumper as the pack sailed down the front chute.

Paine held on for the victory, followed closely by McCreadie. Gary Tomkins took home third, with Decker and Smoker rounding out the top five.

The 20-lap DIRT Sportsman feature saw John Plumb lead all of 19 laps only to lose the race on the final lap to Joe Beyea.

Only one yellow slowed the event. On lap one Dan Wiesner saw a front wheel go sailing over the first turn fence. He was towed back to the pit area and immediately returned to the race without losing a lap.

Beyea closed in on Plumb over the final four circuits, finally catching and passing Plumb going down the backstretch on the final lap. Beyea earned his first ever Canandaigua victory. Plumb finished second followed by Justin Haers, Karl Comfort and Eldon Payne Jr. in fifth.

Pro-stock action saw the 2000 track champion, Jipp Ortiz, taken out on the first lap in a multi-car tangle on the inside of the fourth turn. Jim McGuigan was the early leader, followed by Billy Brown, Lee Burnett and Wayne Ellison.

On lap five the yellow flew when Ellison spun out in the third turn. Burnett was now running second, but Brown was still challenging him for the position. Brown retook second on lap eight and the next lap pulled along side of McGuigan as the duo sailed down the front straightaway. One lap later Burnett passed McGuigan for second.

With just one lap remaining Brian Thompson looped his car in the fourth turn forcing the race to end checkers-and-yellow. Brown picked up the victory with Burnett in second. McGuigan finished third followed by divisional points leader Jason Boyle and Jon Miller.

Two 10 lap Street Stock features had to be run due to having 31 cars on hand. The first feature was caution riddled. Nathan Peckham led the first five laps when he turned over the lead to Eric Giguere. Richard Briggs, fresh off a flip the week before, took over the lead on lap eight and took the win. Phil LaVare, James Henry, Ray Cooper and Chris Jacobs rounded out the top five.

The worst accident of that race came on lap eight when Chris Cooper rolled hi number 22J in turn three.

The second 10-lapper saw Frank Burnell take the lead at the drop of the green and establish a five car advantage. On lap five he blew a motor entering the third turn and sent the field scrambling. This allowed Leroy Lewis to take the lead and eventually the victory. Jared LaBarge, Darren Phippen, Nick Rizzo and Mike Welch rounded out the top five.

This Saturday will find a regular four star program on tap at Canandaigua, featuring DIRT Street Stocks, Pro-stocks, Sportsman and Modifieds. It will also be the first weekend race where AMB electronic scoring transponders will be required for the open wheel classes, plus Pro-stocks.

Race time will be at 7 p.m., with pit gates opening at 4:30 p.m. sharp.
