PAINE MAKES IT THREE IN A ROW AT LAND OF LEGENDS
CANANDAIGUA, NY...Steve Paine, from Waterloo, NY, made it three wins in a row at the Canandaigua Speedway following his 35- lap DIRT Modified feature victory. Matt Sheppard, also from Waterloo, earned a walk away victory in the 20-lap DIRT Sportsman main. Young Chad Homan picked up the victory in the Pro-stock division's 15-lap feature and Mike Ferens won the 10-lap Street Stock feature.
Ray Bliss Jr. took the lead at the drop of the green flag from his pole starting spot. Third place Dale Planck followed Bliss to take second followed by Chuck Hebing in third. Hebing was able to get a run at Planck, taking second on lap three. The yellow flew on lap four when Tim McCreadie came to a stop in the fourth turn.
Bliss was able to maintain his lead on the restart, however Hebing seemed to be even more insistent that he was going to take the lead. The yellow flag unfurled for the second time on lap eight when McCreadie again came to halt on the track, this time on the back stretch.
Hebing was able to take advantage of his motor power and pass Bliss for the lead on the lap nine restart. Gary Tomkins was now running third behind Hebing and Bliss. Hebing show great perseverance holding off advance after advance from Tomkins and Danny Johnson. A yellow flag on lap 22 saw Pat Ward's night come to an end as he pulled to the high side of the second turn. On the restart Danny was able to complete a pass on Hebing for the lead. Just five laps later Hebing looped his mount in the inside of the fourth turn, thus ending his night also.
Steve Paine and Danny Johnson then proceeded to put on a drive exhibition, each darting into the lead. In the back of the field the racing sometimes was three wide. Paine took over the lead for good on lap 26 and cruised home for the victory. Danny finished second followed by Tomkins, Charlie Donk and Tim Fuller. Matt Sheppard started near the front of the field due to a poor finish the week before. That was all Sheppard needed to pull out his first feature win of the year, in a race that only saw one caution on lap one.
Sheppard finished a full straight away in front of Karl Comfort. Paul Guererri had to settle for third followed by rookie John Plumb and Justin Haers.
The 10-lap Street stock race saw three early cautions spoil the run, all for spin outs on the track. The cautions helped thirteenth place Mike Ferens move quickly to the front of the field. On lap five, Ferens took command of the race. Last week's winner Dave Mannise was the first car knocked out of the event following a multi-car spin out, with contact, in the fourth turn on lap three.
Ferens took the victory followed by James Henry, Leroy Lewis, Brad Steinruck and Fred Srock. For Ferens the victory was sweet as he and his wife were at the track celebrating their first wedding anniversary.
In Pro-stock competition Wayne Ellison looked well on his way to victory when a third turn accident with the second place car driven by Dave Conant Jr. occurred on lap eight. This allowed Chad Homan to take over the lead on lap nine Homan would use this opportunity to earn his first feature win of 2000. Jipp Aortas, Rick Miller, Mike Minutlo, and Mike Cooper rounded out the top five.
"The car was running hot at the start of the race and we developed an awful vibration," commented Homan in victory lane. "I am not a religious person, but I was praying the whole last part of the race."
This Saturday will find a special treat on hand for the fans when the ESS roll into Canandaigua for a special sprint car program. The Ess will be joining a full card of DIRT Modified, Sportsman, Pro-stock and Street Stock action. Race time will be at 7 p.m..
