PAINE DOUBLES, WHILE GUERERRI AND SWARTHOUT SPLIT

CANANDAIGUA, NY...A full card of racing saw the rain delayed sportsman and modified features from Paine Motorsports night the first events to take to the half mile last Saturday at Canandaigua Speedway. Paul Guererri picked up his first feature win of the 1999 season in the 20-lap sportsman main, while Steve Paine won the 35-lap modified portion. Paine later returned and took the victory in the regularly scheduled 35-lapper. Rich Swarthout picked up the victory in the 20-lap sportsman feature. Also earning victories on the evening were Darrell Ebersole in the Pro-stocks, Mike Minutolo in the Pure Stocks and Darrell Sauders in the Bonanza Buses.

The rain delayed sportsman feature saw Jerry Haers Jr. lead all the way until lap 18 when a yellow flag flew as rookie Matt Sheppard slowed to a stop in the first turn. The restart saw what might be considered the controversy of the evening as Hears Jr. looped his car in front of the field, allowing second place Guererri to take the lead. Some felt that contact between these two front runners took place and that Guererri should be sent to the rear of the field. After further review, with the help of television tape replays it was determined that Guererri did not make contact. He went on to claim the victory. Justin Haers finished a strong second followed by Wade Czymmek, Karl Comfort and Steve Gray. Henderson's twelfth place finish allowed Karl Comfort to become the points leader.

Darryl Ruggles and Bill Hoff brought the field down to take Ben Vitale's green flag. Hoff immediately jumped into the lead. Unfortunately for Ruggles, he was involved in the first yellow, lap 3, when he and Chuck Hebing made contact in the first turn. The restart was not much better as a four car accident took place in the first turn involving both Bob and Tim McCreadie, Vic Coffey and Billy Decker.

Ray Bliss Jr. was now the leader of record. Bliss looked strong until lap eight when Hoff, running in sixth, looped his number 4 in the fourth turn to bring out a yellow. On the restart Bliss was able to hold the field at bay for two laps, when Pat Ward used a low move in the fourth turn to pass him for the lead. Ward then proceeded to lead a freight train involving himself, Danny Johnson, Steve paine, Bliss and Billy Decker.

On lap 18 the yellow flew as Gary Tomkins spun in the first turn. This bunched the pack together and would allow Paine the opportunity to pass Johnson for second. Pain then proceeded to pass ward for the lead on lap 24. A late race caution, on lap 33, when Billy Decker suffered a flat tire didn't hamper Paine's winning ways. Paine took the victory followed by Johnson, Ward, Tim Fuller and Vic Coffey. Decker's flat tire cost him a lap to repair and based on the feature finish, the points lead at the speedway.

The regular 35-lap feature again saw ray Bliss Jr. out front in the early stages of the race. Bliss slowed dramatically on lap five and lost the lead to Bob McCreadie. The first yellow of the race fell on lap six when consolation race winner, Jimmy Burke slowed in the first turn. Danny Johnson was now second followed by Jeff Hoff, Chuck Bower, Gary Tomkins and Paine.

It was Paine's night, as he passed four cars on the restart to take second. However a second yellow for a double spin, Scott Schrader in the first turn and Burke in the fourth turn, stopped Paine from passing McCreadie for the lead. The restart was all paine needed as he was recorded as the leader on lap eight. From this point on it was all Paine, with MccReadie tucked tightly on his rear bumper. Billy Decker was in third, back nearly a half straight away followed by Johnson, and Tim McCreadie. On lap 24, a flat tire happened on the Decker mount again, causing the yellow flag to fly. The Decker team was able to change tires this time without losing a lap.

Paine sailed to the victory followed by Danny Johnson, who had passed McCreadie with just five laps remaining. McCreadie finished third followed by his son Tim and Charlie Donk. The 20-lap Sportsman main saw Clay Parmelee lead the first lap, when David Allen passed him on lap two for the lead. Allen only held on for three laps, when he lost the lead to Rich Swarthout, lap five.

Swarthout then took his number 5s home for the victory followed by Vince Vitale, Matt Sheppard, Allen and Todd Henderson. Henderson's fifth place, combined with Comfort's eighth place finish again placed Henderson on top of the track sportsman points battle. Two short cautions slowed the race, both coming at the mid-point of the race.

The 15-lap Pro-stock feature was caution filled, as six yellows slowed the event, most for spin outs. Billy Brown gave up the lead after on lap to Scott Fremouw. Fremouw held the front spot for just two laps, when Jon Miller took command of the event. Miller looked strong, but when ever he was able to build a lead the yellow fell and the field would be bunched together again. On lap twelve, Darrell Ebersole took the lead. Miller lost second to John Unaman one lap later. At the finish Ebersole took his first victory of the season followed by Unman, Tom Barron, Miller and Fremouw. A penalty for jumping cars on the final restart saw Barron pushed back to fifth.

The winner of all heat races run in the Pro-stocks, Sportsman and Modified divisions all received $50 each from the night's sponsor, All-County Construction. These $50 winners included: Randy Miller, Scott Fremouw, Billy Brown, Karl Comfort, Rich Swarthout, Wade Czymmek, Steve Paine, Bob McCreadie and Tim McCreadie.

Eight time Pure stock feature winner, Mike Minutolo, came from the back of the starting field and took his ninth feature win of the year in the 10-lap feature. Also on tap for the night were the Bonanza Buses, with Darrell Sauders outlasting Roy Rogers for the victory.

This Saturday features a regular card of four star racing on Pick-n-Pull Auto Parts night. It will also be Kodak employees night at the speedway. Race time is set for 7 p.m. sharp. On Wednesday, September 1, the Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series, presented by Phelps Cement Products, comes to the speedway. Of interest, Canandaigua was chosen to be the site to try out the experimental new qualifying procedures for the series. Starting that evening at 6 p.m., will be time trials for the modifieds. The top fastest six will be locked into a redraw for the front sports for the feature. Included in this redraw will be the top two finishers in each heat race. Heat action is currently scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. that evening.
