TREMONT GETS #99 WHILE BROWE WINS 1ST IN SPORTSMAN
June 8, 2002, West Lebanon, N.Y.- Kenny Tremont Jr. captured the 30-lap modified feature at Lebanon Valley Speedway Saturday night. Lorne Browe was victorious in the 20-lap Sportsman main and Ed Bachand took top honors in the 20-lap Pro Stock feature. ZAPPALA BLOCK, TREMONT LUMBER and DIG SAFELY sponsored this night of action on the high banks.
The modified feature got off on the wrong foot Saturday night as several cars spun in turn one on the initial green flag. The incident started towards the front of the pack and it was very fortunate more cars were not involved. The Rifenburg #57 of Donnie Corellis grabbed the lead on the restart. Behind him there was a ferocious battle for the second spot between Mike King, John Hewitt and Rich Ricci Jr. Kenny Tremont Jr quickly joined that battle for second and in a flash went around all three drivers and into the runner-up position. It appeared the King’s car broke on lap five and as he tried to get out of the way he made contact with Hewitt. No caution was necessary but both cars were done for the evening. Ricci was looking to end two very bad weeks of racing at the Valley and that as he ran third most of the event. Corellis was already into lapped traffic on lap eight as Tremont slowly began to close in. Brett Hearn slowly, but surely was making his way into contention and was eighth by lap ten.
Corellis and Tremont ran side by side for the lead for several laps before Tremont was able take the lead for good on lap 13. Just after the halfway point Ricci began closing in on Corellis and the battle for second began to heat up. Ricci tried everything to get second, but lapped traffic and a very determined Corellis didn’t allow that to happen. Hearn made some advances in the final stages of the race to finish fifth.
Tremont easily cruised home with a full straightaway victory over Corellis and Ricci. Rob Pitcher had a very strong run in fourth and Hearn was fifth. Matt Quinn, Andy Bachetti, J.R. Heffner, Hector Stratton and Steve Devine rounded out the top ten. Tremont is now just one victory shy of the century-win mark at the Valley.
Lorne Browe took the lead at the start of the 20-lap Sportsman feature and never looked back. John Scarborough looked strong early in the race and was up to second position by lap four. He faded through the middle part of the race to finish eighth. K.C. Goewey got into a jingle on lap five and had to restart from the back of the pack. Goewey did recover to finish seventh. Roy Bridge and Art Collins sat second and third just past the halfway point of the feature and were trying to close the gap that Browe had established. Collins made his way around Bridge for second with five laps remaining and started to apply pressure on Browe.
The top five cars had pulled away to a healthy lead over the rest of the pack, but the would disappear as the caution flag flew on lap 17. Browe was able to hold off Collins on the restart, but Collins continued the pressure. Another caution with just one lap remaining had the fans on the edge of their seats. Could Browe hold off Collins or would the cagey veteran get by for the victory. Browe did everything he could to keep Collins at bay and took home his first career sportsman feature victory. It was a good thing the race was not any longer as the left front tire on the Browe’s Asphalt Services #14 went flat in victory lane. Collins had to settle for second, Bridge third, Jeff Carr was fourth and Frank Harper rounded out the top five.
Ed Bachand took command of the 20-lap Pro Stock feature on the initial green flag with Al Blackburn and Robbie Speed in tow. Paul LaRochelle moved into second after a lap three restart. Rob Yetman and Jim Lagenback were coming to the front. They were third and fifth, respectively on lap seven. Al Blackburn was able to get around Yetman on a lap nine restart.
Just past the halfway point of the race the leader; Bachand began to show some engine smoke. The question was could he last? LaRochelle applied all the pressure he could but was never able to make his way around Bachand. So Bachand picked up his first victory of the 2002 season. LaRochelle settled for second, Danny Sanchez was third, Yetman fourth and Lagenback rounded out the top five.
Jay Corbin picked up his second win in a row in the Rookie Pro Stock feature. The Pure Stock winners on Saturday night included: Chris Stalker, Pete Defiglio, Jay Martin and Jim Hankey. Jimmy Nichols & Tony Zabrini tied for the victory in the roll-over contest with 7 points each.
Lebanon Valley Speedway will be back in action next Saturday night with a regular program. Race time is set for 6:15.
