TREMONT LUMBERS TO FOURTH WIN AT VALLEY
Saturday, June 27, 1998
WEST LEBANON, NY- Kenny Tremont of West Sand Lake, NY took home the win in the 30-lap modified feature Saturday night at Lebanon Valley. Art Collins was the victor in the 20-lap sportsman main. Danny Sanchez won the 20-lap street stock feature. Sanchez won $500 compliments of Capital Speed. The fans were treated to a great fireworks display compliments of Tremont Lumber and Zappala Block.
Mike Benson took the lead on the green flag to start the modified feature. Jody Tornabene, Maynard Forrette, and John Hewitt closely pursued him. Meanwhile, Tremont was on a tear from his 14th starting position, he was up to eighth by lap two. Maynard Forrette had a good run all night; he took the second position on lap six. Brett Hearn was beginning his charge to the front taking tenth on lap five. Tornabene, Don Ackner and Hewitt went three wide for the second spot on lap ten.
Tremont took third on the tenth lap as he continued his charge to the front. Tremont caught the second place Forrette on lap eleven and set his sights on the front running Benson. Tremont made the pass for the lead on lap 13 and began to pull away from the field. Tremont would dominate the midway portion of the feature as the rest of the field battled for positions. Forrette and Hearn had a good battle towards the end of the feature for the third spot. The two ran side by for several laps with Hearn eventually making the pass on lap 24.
Hearn would pass Benson for second on lap 26, but Tremont had already opened a half-track advantage. Tremont would see his huge lead disappear on lap 28 as the first yellow flag flew. Hearn would have two lapped cars between himself and Tremont on the restart. Tremont pulled away on the restart and took the checkered flag first for the fourth time this season. Mike Benson had his best finish ever finishing third. Maynard Forrette also had a good finish coming home fourth. Don Ackner rounded out the top five.
Tremont and Hearn are now tied with four wins apiece on the season. Chris Moore is the only other driver to grace victory lane in the modified division this season. Hearn currently has a 16-point lead over Tremont in the point title chase.
K.C. Goewey led the field down to the start of the 20-lap sportsman feature with David Sanchez was second. The yellow flag flew on lap five for debris on the track. Art Collins set his sights on the front early, moving up to fourth by lap seven. Collins would grab second on a lap seven restart and Bobby Chalmers took third on that same restart.
K.C. Goewey and Art Collins had a good battle for the lead on lap nine. Collins made the pass for the lead going into turn one, but drifted high allowing Goewey to slip back by for the lead.
George Marcus was steadily making his way to the front taking fifth on lap nine. Collins took the lead on lap ten as Marcus took fourth. Marcus would catch the third place car of Bobby Chalmers on lap 12. Meanwhile there was some good racing going on in the middle of the pack. Bobby Hackel and Chris Kokosa ran side by side for seventh on lap 12. Marcus would grab second on a lap 17 restart and would pull up the backside of Collins after a lap 19 caution. Marcus could not catch Collins as he took his second win of the season. Chalmers came home third, Mike Boomhower fourth and Goewey rounded out the top five.
Dave Kokindo led the first lap of the 20-lap street stock feature. He would lose the lead to Rob Yetman on a lap two restart. Danny Sanchez took the lead on lap four and led the remainder of the feature. Point leader, Scott Goversten was up to seventh by lap six. Dave Striebel would be out of contention on lap nine with a flat tire. Todd Goldstein was looking to repeat his win from last week as he took fourth on lap nine. Adam Haas would pit on lap ten with a left rear flat tire.
