Sarver, PA June 20, 2003

It was a night of firsts at Don Martinis Lernerville Speedway. Despite threatening rain clouds encircling the track, the fireworks blazed in the sky and the "stars" were able to shine at the speedway on the "action packed" holiday weekend. It was a career first for Freeport's Mike Shearer in the St. Barnabas Health System Sprints. Keith Barbara of South Park earned a Lernerville first ever feature victory in the Friedmans Supermarket/Bi-Lo Foods Late Models. Overcoming a three-year dry spell, Tom Winkle of Mars garnered the Ferrante Motor Cars Modified win and Chris Schneider scored his second Dingbat's Restaurant Pure Stock triumph. One hundred twenty-five race cars crowded the pit area on #1 Cochran Automotive Night!

Tom Winkle celebrated his first 20-lap Ferrante Motor Cars Modified victory since July 2000 and his third win overall at the Sarver oval. He said "I guess this is my lucky night!" Winkle was in third at the start of the race as Kevin Bolland took charge for four laps. On a fourth lap yellow flag event, both Bob Wearing Jr. and Winkle got the edge when the race resumed and passed Bolland. Using the inside line, Winkle's AGX/ Bear Run Pipeline /Hein Starters sponsored #28 eventually passed Wearing Jr on lap 11. He then rocketed his Larrel Smith owned Modified to victory over the strong running Mark Flick, who has returned to the dirt circuit. Flick said, "Tommy's a good driver. It was his race to win after he got the lead." Winkle welcomed the victory but was looking for the good competition to challenge him at the end of the race. Wearing Jr was third and was followed by Jim Weller Jr, Dave Murdick, Kevin Bolland, Jim Weller III, Budweiser point leader Brian Swartzlander, Carl Murdick, and Rodney Beltz. Swartzlander, Dave Murdick and John Braymer won the heat races and Rodney Beltz checkered the B-Main.
