DAVE HEASLIP CRUSHES 358 MODIFIED FIELD AT FROGTOWN

Smith Falls, Ontario veteran modified driver Dave Heaslip got out the broom and made a clean sweep in the 358 Modified division last Saturday night at Frogtown International Speedway by winning both the rained out feature from July 26th and the regular feature event as well. Heaslip also added a qualifying heat too just for good measure.

In the first 358 DIRT Modified Feature sponsored by Sno-Parts Unlimited, River Valley Antique Tractor Club and the Village Hobby and Trophy Shop, veteran driver Bill Cook grabbed the early lead from his #2 starting spot and lead for the first 11 laps of the race when Heaslip came storming up from his 7th starting spot to challenge Cook for the lead. From lap 7 to lap 11, the two very popular long time racers staged a great battle that just thrilled the crowd to no end. Heaslip finally was able to "slip" by Cook on lap #12 for the lead. Jeff Sykes and Brian McDonald got by Cook as well in laps 14-16 and set their sights on Heaslip.

On lap #18, Brian McDonald got by Sykes for second and tried to run down Heaslip but Dave was just hooked up perfectly and went on to a big win. Brian "Slim" McDonald held on for second with points leader Jeff Sykes hanging on for third. Mark Hitchcock and Bill Cook rounded out the top five.

In the second DIRT 358 Modified event sponsored by Sherwin Williams, Peg’s Painting and LaFrance Performance, Mark Smoke grabbed the early lead only to have Dan Jalbert take it away and lead for the next three laps. Brian McDonald who started 6th in the field moved up to challenge Heaslip for the lead followed by Kevin Fetterly, Al Jacobs and Kyle Jacobs. Al and Kyle both got by McDonald with Kyle putting the big heat on Heaslip for the lead. Numerous times Kyle pulled along side the veteran but Heaslip never strayed from his line and went on for the victory. Kyle Jacobs hung on for second with Mark Hitchcock coming all the way from his 12th starting spot to take third. Al Jacobs and the always consistent and steady Leon Gonyo rounded out the top five.

In the DIRT Pro Stock division, it was the 2nd leg of the Coors Light Frogtown International Speedway Super Series sponsored in part by Snap on Tools. In the first event, Dave Bissonnette grabbed the lead from Louie Jackson on lap 11 and then holding off young sensation Clayton Benedict to take the win. Benedict finished second with Gilles Godard getting up for third, Louie Jackson and Tammy Jalbert rounding out the top five.

In the regularly scheduled feature go, it was Dave Bissonnette going two for two but not before Bissonnette had to fend off a tough Louie Jackson for the win. Bissonnette took the lead on lap 17 of the event and went on for the win. Jackson finished second with Jody Swamp doing an incredible job of driving and catching a couple of good breaks to finish third. 2002 rookie of the year Travis Back finished fourth with John Lazore rounding out the top five.

In the Semi Pro class that saw some of the most exciting racing of the season, young Carey Terrance took the win with Wayne Foster finishing second. John Bashaw, Mike McDonald and Dion Oakes rounded out the top five.

In the 2nd feature, it was Pete Backus coming out the winner with four cars coming to the finish line side by side for the win with Backus taking the win. New comer Dominic Gauvreau finished second with Steve Brand, Caleb Bradley and Greg Ezard rounding out the top five.

In the Bandit division, it was Dan Lortie finding his way to victory lane with Kevin Mere taking second, Jeb Beeson, Billy "Woo Woo" Woodward and Kurtis McPhee rounding out the top five.

In the second feature, Billy Woodward, Jr. set a torrid pace to go on for the win with Ernie Cree having his best run of the season finishing second. Kurtis McPhee got up for third with Dan Lortie and Trevor White rounding out the top five.

Brandon Snyder made short work of a very competitive field and also survived an early race spin to take the win in the Enduro feature. Francis Thompson came from the middle of the pack to finish second with Ricky Thompson, Konke Lazore and Corey Edwards rounding out the top five.

Next week will be a busy weekend and week at the speedway. First on Saturday night August 9th, it will be Dave’s Barber Shop / Smith Lumber and St. Lawrence Centre night at the speedway with a Pro Stock autograph session just before the start of the Pro Stock feature.
