It's Hoffman Holly-Day Redux At New Egypt
New Egypt, NJ (July 13) - Defending Modified champion Keith Hoffman wishes
Christmas would come every week. The Whitehall, PA, driver iced down the
heated efforts of both Billy Pauch and Kenny Brightbill Saturday night at
New Egypt Speedway to win his second consecutive Christmas in July event,
sponsored by Advantage Financial Mortgage Bankers of Robbinsville, NJ.
"We had a good car tonight. What a good deal it was to beat those guys!"
said Hoffman, after scoring his third feature win of the 2002 season. "I
knew Billy was fast on top, but my car felt good on the bottom. I know I
didn't run too many good laps at the end - but it was enough to win."
Kenny Brightbill seemed like the man to beat early in the 30-lap Modified
main event, powering into the lead on lap 7 and running away from the pack.
Billy Pauch made his presence known in a big way after a lap 14 restart,
winging his #1 around the top of the track, right up against the wall, while
Brightbill kept his cool down low. What looked to be a two-way tussle
between two titans turned into a four-wide battle on a lap 19 restart. The
next tour Hoffman surprised Pauch on the low side to steal second. Hoffman
slid past Brightbill and into the lead on lap 25. But the race was far from
over: with three to go, Pauch hustled into second and zeroed in on the
leader. While the fans jumped to their feet, Pauch barely nudged past
Hoffman on the final tour. Hoffman, however, would have none of it and shut
the door to fly first under the flag for his third of the year, the eighth
of his career. Pauch settled for second with Frank Cozze a hard-charging
third, Brightbill in fourth and Darren McCaughey in fifth.
Morganville, NJ's Dominick Buffalino shook the monkey off his back to record
a fine first win of the year in the Sportsman 20-lapper, becoming the
track's 11th different Sportsman winner in 12 races run this season. Matt
Papiez, Jeff Carpenter, Mike Toth and Keith Fleming followed Buffalino to
the line.
Rich Page of Manville, NJ, also scored a first of the year after weeks of
bad luck in the Super Stock ranks. Page pulled off a dramatic last-lap,
last-turn pass to score the victory. Jon Hewitt, robbed of a first-ever trip
to victory lane for the second time this season, was once again a
bridesmaid. Current point leader Ralph Gargiulo was third, with Kory Fleming
fourth and Al Cheney III fifth.
The Herman's Trucking Lightning Lap Awards for fastest lap in a feature
event were won by Kenny Brightbill (Mods, 18.638), Dominick Buffalino
(Sportsman, 19.984) and Jon Hewitt (Super Stock, 21.450). A special
"Three-Quick" award, offered by Cream Ridge Golf Club to the third-fastest
in each division, awarded extra bucks to Keith Hoffman (Modified), Larry
Kline (Sportsman) and Rich Page (Super Stock).
Primed by the generosity of Advantage Financial President Gene Stravinsky,
fans donated $3,134 and more than 5,100 toys to the U.S Marine Corps Toys
for Tots drive in a wildly successful Christmas in July fundraiser that
broke all records. In return, Stravinsky gave away more than $9,000 worth of
big-ticket prizes - including TVs, VCRs, DVD and CD players, stereo systems
and bicycles - to fans who supported the toy drive. Santa and his elves were
on site to distribute the Christmas bounty.
Next week, July 20, it's Reclamation's Triple Play at New Egypt, with triple
20s for the Mod squad. Sportsman and Super Stocks are also on the racing
card. Gates open at 4 pm, with first race at 6. Adult admission is $18,
children 7-12 are $6, and kids 6 and under are free. For more information,
call the speedway office at (609) 758-1900.
