CHARLIE DONK AND LARRY KNOWLES NEW WINNERS AT BLACK ROCK
DUNDEE, NY ..... There were two new winners in victory lane last Friday night at the Black Rock Speedway. Charlie Donk took his first win of the 2001 season in the 358 Modified division, and Larry Knowles took his first ever Black Rock win in the PPG Super-Stock division. Steve Brace kept his record perfect, as he scored his third win in as many weeks. Joe Povoski did the same thing in the first NAPA 4 Cyl. Stock feature, while Donnie Lawson made it two for two in the second feature. Jon Wallenbeck took his first win of the season in the Black Rock Bandits.
There was big news in the Modified feature at Black Rock last Friday night. First, Steve Paine didn't win. Second, he didn't finish. Third, at the end of the night, he was no longer the point leader. Lance Dusett was the early leader in the 25 lap main event, but there was a traffic jam on lap three going into turn three. Tom Stewart spun his #84, and Steve Paine tried to avoid the spinning car and made contact and spun to the infield, breaking a shock on the Terrell's Potato Chips 7X. He was done for the night. As the race re-started, Todd Henderson was the man in charge of the field. Charlie Donk was on the move, and was up to third by lap eight. Donk was in the lead by lap 10, and Todd Henderson was running second. At the half way mark, Donk was still on top of the field, Henderson second, Bryon Turner third, Alex Hoag fourth, and Lance Dusett fifth. The final yellow flag came on lap 24 for a John Moravec spin in turn three. This set up a one lap dash for the win between Charlie Donk and Todd Henderson. At the checkers it was Donk in for the popular win, Henderson was a close second, third was Bryon Turner, new point leader, Alex Hoag was fourth, and Lance Dusett filled up the top five. Heats were won by, Aaron Jacobus, Charlie Donk, and Bryon Turner.
This seemed to be a bad night for point leaders, as Dale Welty also had his problems in the PPG Super-Stock feature. Bob Johnson grabbed the early lead in the event, as Kevin Chilson and Chris Daugherty battled for second and third. Daugherty took the lead on a lap 7 re-start. There was a big jam up on the next lap in turn four involving Dave DuBoise, Chris McCann and Dale Welty. Welty came out the big loser in this one, as his 1-2-3 incurred heavy front end damage, and he was out for the night. The second point leader, and previously undefeated driver was out of contention. AS the race continued, Daugherty was still at the top of the field, and Eddie Mills was second, with Dave Fultz third. By the half way point, Larry Knowles had moved up to second place and he was putting heavy pressure on Chris Daugherty. Knowles took the lead on lap 10, as Chris Daugherty took the #26 to the pits. Eddie Mills was now putting pressure on Knowles for the lead, and Dave Fultz was third. As the laps clicked off, Knowles began to pull away. Lap 17 saw Eddie Mills great drive come to an end as he went pitside. As the checkers were waving, it was Larry Knowles across the line for his first win. Dave Fultz was second, third, was Mike Carapella, fourth went to Chris Daugherty, and Carl Cleveland rounded out the top five. Heats went to Larry Knowles, Carl Cleveland, and Dave Duboise.
Steve Brace seems to have a solid lock on the Regional International Pro- Truck division, as he picked up his third win in as many weeks. The man that put on the drive of the race was Jeff Barner. He, and Tommy Austin battled early for the lead. Steve Brace was on the move up through the field, and was second by lap eight. At the half way mark, it was Jeff Barner out in front, Brace second, third was Eddie Machuga, fourth was Don Divens, and Fred Buckley was fifth. Brace took the lead on a lap 11 re-start, and went on for his third win in a row. Jeff Barner, drove a great race and finished second. Third was Don Divens, fourth Jim Roberts, and Eddie Machuga was fifth. Heats were taken by Machuga, and Jeff Barner.
In the NAPA 4 Cyl. Stocks, Joe Povoski continued his winning ways, as he picked up his third win of the season. He took the lead early in the 15 lap first feature and went on for the win. Brian Conley was second, third was Karl Weichenthal, Jason White was fourth, and Eddie Crawford rounded out the top five. In the second feature, Donnie Lawson had a spirited battle with early leader Kenny Hunt, and took the lead for good on lap 12, and went on for his second win in a row. Hunt finished second, third was Randy Mathews, fourth was Ray Decker, and Mike Hughey filled out the top five. Heat winners were, Joe Povoski, Willie Grant, Kenny Hunt, and Skip Dean.
In the Black Rock Bandits, Jon Wallenbeck took the second win of his career, as he jumped out to the early lead. Adam Austin grabbed the second spot on lap eight and chased Wallenbeck to the line. Third went to Josh Mills, Steven Ovens was fourth, and Tyler Avery was fifth.
In 1 on 1 spectator racing, Darryl Saunders driving his infamous "Grey Ghost" was the car division winner, and Joe Reed took the truck win. Reed took the overall win, as Saunders slipped off the bank in turn four coming down to the checkers.
