STEVE PAINE TAKES MOD MAIN, WINSTON CUP STAR, TONY STEWART FINISHES 7TH
DUNDEE,N.Y......Steve Paine took another win in the Modified division last Friday night at the Black Rock Speedway. Winston Cup star, Tony Stewart was at Black Rock, and drove Paine's Summit car to a seventh place finish. Dale Welty was the winner of the big 50 lap Elmira\Ithaca Auto Paint-PPG feature for the Super-Stocks. Ron Divens was the winner of the Regional Pro-Trucks for the second week in a row. Eddie Mills, and Matt Balmer were winners in the 4 Cyl. Stocks, while Serenity Sutherland took the win in the Black Rock Bandits on Chilson Bros. Roofing\Two Rivers Timber night.
Sportsman driver, Rich Swarthout led the early laps of the Modified main, but Steve Paine was on his way to the front in a hurry, and was tenth by lap seven. Winston Cup star, Tony Stewart was on hand for the evening, and was driving Paine's Summit car, and he too, was on the move, but he spun in turn three on lap 7 and had to go to the rear of the field. He would recover in a few laps to 11th. But on the 11th lap in almost the same spot, he made contact with Charlie Donk, and once again was put to the tail of the field. At the half way point, Bryon Turner was at the top of the field, and Paine was now
second, and closing in on Turner, Rich Swarthout was third, followed by Ron White, and Alex Hoag. Paine took the lead on lap 17, and Tony Stewart was 11th. Once out in front, Paine began to run away from the field. Stewart was racing for 6th place with Alex Hoag as the checkers were in the air, Hoag beat Stewart for 6th by inches at the line. Paine took the win, finishing second was Bryon Turner, Tim Sebring was third, fourth was Charlie Donk, and Rich Swarthout hung on for fifth. Heats were won by Swarthout, Ron White, and Chuck Kennison.
Elmira\Ithaca Auto Paint-PPG, were presenting a big 50 lap feature for the Super-Stocks, and Dale Welty took another win in this event, as he took the lead on a lap 10 restart, and pulled away from the rest of the field. He did have one scary moment in the event, as Sparky Hills pulled out of the infield heading for the pits, he pulled right in front of Welty, and the two almost collided. Chris McCann was having one of his best runs of the season, running fourth. On lap 46 his run came to an end as he spun through the infield and got hung up on a concrete barrier. When the checkered flag came down, it was Welty with another win, Chris Daugherty was second, third was Quinn Sutherland, fourth was Kevin Chilson, and Carl Cleveland filled out the top five. Heats went to, Welty, Bruce Ross, and Carl Cleveland.
"Racer" Ron Divens picked up his second win in a row in the Regional in a bizarre set of circumstances. Fred Buckley jumped out to the early lead, and Ron Divens and Tommy Austin were right there for second and third. Austin moved up to second, and Buckley and Austin put on an almost race long battle for the lead. On lap 16 a yellow came out, and the two front runners were put to the tail of the field for rough riding each other. Ron Divens went on for the win. Brian Austin was second, third was Billy Wilson, and fourth was Don Divens, and Steve Brace was fifth. Heats went to, Ralph Warren, and Don Divens.
In 4 Cyl. Stock racing, Eddie Mills was the winner in the first of two features, as he increased his point lead over Jack Ayers. Ayers finished second, third was Phil Yaw, fourth was Fred Mathews, and Jake Clancey filled out the top five. In the second feature, Matt Balmer won his first of the
year, Skip Dean got second, third was Karl Weichenthal, fourth was Greg Crooker, and Les Irwin was fifth. Heats were won by Skip Dean, Matt Balmer, and Eddie Crawford.
In the Black Rock Bandits, Serenity Sutherland won her first ever feature event, and also became the first female driver to win in that division. Ray Spiecher was second, Steven Ovens was third, Trevor Bentley was fourth and Willie Grant Jr. filled up the top five.
