PENN CAN VICTORIES TO BRIAN WEAVER, CRAIG TERRELL, JOE DAMIANO, BRETT
SPOOR, AND SHANE WOLF
(Susquehanna, Pa.) Brian Weaver picked up his fifth Modified feature
win
last Friday night at the Penn Can Speedway on Barnes-Kasson
Hospital/Susquehanna Fire Department night at the speedway. Craig
Terrell was awarded his fourth Sportsman win of the season when apparent
winner Gary Gallerie was disqualified in post race inspection. Brett
Spoor won his second Super Stock feature of the season while Joe Damiano
came home the winner of the Late Model feature, the first triumph of the
season for the Old Forge, Pa. native. Shane Wolf won his second Pure
Stock featue of the season.
The 30 lap Modified feature saw Bill Huff and Jim Crawn pace the
field to the green flag with Crawn immediately grabbing the lop spot.
Meanwhile, Weaver was on a charge to the front of the field from his
twelfth starting position. Brian found the outside groove of the
speedway to his liking, using the cushion to make his way into
contention
aboard the Decker Logging #9R. By the 12th lap, Brain had advanced to
third and was working all over his brother Chris for the second
position.
The two siblings battled hard for the runner-up position before Brian
was able to make his way past Chris and set his sights on Crawn. Just
four laps later Brian made what would be the winning pass as he drove
around the outside of Crawn in the second turn. Once out front Brian
would not be challenged the rest of the way as he opened up a
comfortable
advantage over the closing laps. Crawn did manage to hold off Chris
Weaver to score a seasons best runner-up finish by a narrow margin over
third finishing Chris Weaver. Mike Colsten and Butch Tittle completed
the top five. George Kostelansky rebounded from a mid-race incident to
finish sixth ahead of Alan Rudalavage, Carl Nagel, Bill Huff and Chris
Shupp.
A season hight 31 Modifieds took part in four heat races which were
won by Rich Keehle, Butch Tittle, George Kostelansky, and Jim Crawn.
Chris Shupp was the winner of the consolation event.
In Sportsman action, it appeared as if Gary Gallerie was going to
win his third feature of the season as Gallerie dominated the event,
grabbing the lead early and holding off Craig Terrell to cross the
finish
line the apparent winner. Gallerie's victory would not stand up,
however, as speedway tech inspectors disallowed the victory when Gary's
car could not successfully make it through post race inspection. This
gave the win to Terrell, the current point leader in the Sportsman
division. It was the fourth Sportsman win of the season for the pilot
of
the Klinger's Kawasaki sponsored #78. Teenagers Dan Vauter and Garth
Tonkin Jr. were second and third with Brett Boyer finishing fourth in
his
first Penn Can start. Brett Tonkin made it two Tonkin brothers in the
top five with his fifth place finish. Jamie Shea, Ray Pursell, Brian
Decker, Tom Leyshon, and Mike Marold completed the top ten.
Craig Terrell, Gary Gallerie, and Brett Tonkin won Sportsman
qualifying races.
Joe Damiano picked up his first win of the season in Late Model
action. The Old Forge, Pa. native took advantage of a front row
starting
spot to lead every lap of the Late Model feature aboard his Main
Engines/Rocket Chassis sponsored #11A. The win was a complete reversal
of fortunes for Damiano, who two weeks ago was involved in a heavy
frontstretch crash. Joe and his crew's many hours of hard labor to get
the car back in racing condition paid off on Friday night as Joe turned
in a dominating run to take the victory. Randall Paxton tried to make a
late run at Damiano but came up short, settling for a runner-up finish
ahead of Jim O'Hara, Keith Mudge, and Dave Zona. Defending Late Model
champion Allen Coy finished sixth while Brent Dyer, Jamie Griffiths,
Daryl Ellis, and Lou Sparks completed the top ten.
Allen Coy and Joe Damiano were Late Model heat race winners.
Brett Spoor found himself in the right place at the right time to
pick up his second Super Stock feature win, taking the top spot aboard
the Ron Stone owned Flintstone Flier #23s. Spoor spent most of the race
running third while Tracy Gregory and Jamie Shea battled for the top
spot. Just four laps from the end of the race, the entire complexion of
the race changed when Gregory and Shea tangled while battling for the
lead. This forced Shea to the pits for a tire change and ended
Gregory's
strong run as well. This opened the door for Spoor, who stated in
victory lane that he had doubted he could have caught Shea and Gregory
had they not had their misfortunes. Paul Rooney finished a season best
second behind Spoor with Dwayne Robbins third. Chris Piasecki overcame
an early flat tire to finish fourth while Shea recovered from his
incident with Gregory to finish fifth. Joe Cabets, Randy Metcalf, Rick
Brown, John Stanley, and Ron Latwinski rounded out the top ten.
Chris Piasecki and Paul Rooney won the two Super Stock heats.
Shane Wolf led all 15 laps of the Pure Stock feature to earn his
second win of the 2002 campaign aboard his Stanton Race Cars sponsored
#81. Wolf was scheduled for the third starting spot, but advanced to
the pole when scheduled polesetter Billy House failed to answer the call
for the feature. Wolf took full advantage of the pole start as he led
the feature all the way to pick up the win. Daryl Ellis made a charge
at
Wolf on the final lap but fell just short and settled for second.
Michael Lartz, Toby Sparks, and Everett Cass completed the top five.
Finishing sixth through tenth were Nate Evans, Bret Welch, Harry Marvin
III, Craig Decker, and Kevin Davies.
Nate Evans, Billy House, and Shane Wolf won the Pure Stock heat
races.
This Friday night finds another five star card of racing action at
the Penn Can Speedway. The Modifieds, Sportsman, Late Models, Super
Stocks, and Pure Stocks will all be in action in complete shows. Racing
gets underway promptly at 7:15 PM.
