Brian Weaver of Windsor, New York won the Penn Can Spectacular Friday in

one of the years most exciting races over Butch Tittle of Saylorsburg, Pa. The Penn Can

point championship came down to the last lap of the Spectacular as Tittle hung on to

claim thePenn Can Championship by the slimmest of margins. Dan Stone of Thompson

won the late model Spectacular while Gene Sharpsteen edged Billy Marvin by one point

for the season title. Chris Piesecki claimed the street stock race win while Rich Keehle

edges Scott Conover by one point for the championship. Chad Stone wins in pure stocks

with Brian Decker capturing the title. Bob Chapman wins again in the IMCA modifieds.

The modified feature started with all eyes on Butch Tittle and Brian Weaver. Only

twelve points seperated the two drivers in the championship hunt. The car on the move

was the fast running car of Mike Colsten of Binghampton. Colsten shot out into the lead

with Tittle and Weaver making their way to the front. Early problems hit third place man

Kirk Horton as his car came to a rest with motor problems bring out a early yellow.

When racing resumed, Colsten continued to show the way. Tittle and Weaver were

having their own battle behind with the cars of Rick Virkitis and Al Rudalavge joining the

fight. Colsten kept the lead through a rash of yellow flags.

At the three quarter point in the race, Colsten’s great run ended handing the lead to

Weaver. For weaver to win the championship, he had to finish three positions in front of

Tittle. With seven laps remaining, Virkitis and Rudalavage moved into second and third

followed by Tittle.

With one burst o fspeed, Tittle went by both cars with only three laps remaining and

held on for a second place finish behind Weaver. Virkitis claimed third with Chuck Akulis

getting by Rudalavage for fourth.

The late model feature had much the same drama as Dan Stone took the lead early and

cruised off for the win. The excitement of the race was the point battle between Billy

Marvin and Gene Sharpsteen. The drive finishing the in front would win the title.

Sharpsteen got to the front of Marvin early in the race. Marvin did everything possible to

get in front of Sharpsteen into third behind the second place running car of Al Coy. All of

his efforts failed as Sharpsteen took the third position followed by Marvin.

The street stock feature saw both point contenders having problems early in the race.

Rich Keehle headed pitside with driveline problems. The second place man in points, Scott

Conover, also had problems and went a lap down to the field. He kept his car running

hoping to gain enough points for the championship. With few cars dropping from the

feature his efforts came up short by one point. Chris Piesecki did an excellent job winning

his second feature in a row in the street stocks. Keehle be virtue of his finishing position

won the point championship by one poit.

Chad Stone and Brian Decker battled with Ken Sparks all race long in an excellent pure

stock feature. Stone held off Decker and Sparks for his second win of the season while

Decker claimed the point championship.

Bob Chapman of Binghamton scored his third victory in the IMCA modified feature.
