RAIN BREAKS UP DOUBLE DUEL NIGHT ON DIRT, McCREADIE WINS MOD GO, WORLD OF OUTLAWS WIN TO LASOSKI

ELBRIDGE, NY...Bob McCreadie and Danny Lasoski took feature wins at Rolling Wheels Raceway last Thursday, following a rain delay from the night before. McCreadie topped a 25-lap DIRT Modified feature, while Lasoski won the $10,000 World of Outlaws loot. More information on the Outlaw race can be found in a separate column.

The long awaited appearance of the World of Outlaws sprint cars at Rolling Wheels Raceway had to be delayed for one evening as heavy rain storms hit the area dumping as much as 4 inches of rain. Rains hit the speedway following the World of Outlaws time trials and the four DIRT Modified heat races.

With just two laps remaining in the fourth heat the track got extremely slick as heavy rain fell. The heat continued for one more lap and was finally yellow-and-checkered flagged.

The worst accident of the evening came on the first lap of the second modified heat when Ron Smoker hooked the outside lip of the speedway sending his number 62 some 12 feet high into the air, flipping end-over-end on the back stretch. The slammed down on it's roof, backwards. Smoker emerged uninjured, but his car was in need of repair.

It was deemed prudent to rain delay the remainder of the modified show until Thursday evening, May 30. The World of Outlaw sprints would start over from scratch that evening with a new set of time trials.

The 25-lap DIRT Modified feature saw McCreadie charge from his pole starting spot and into the lead. Alan Johnson and Steve Paine battled for second with Johnson coming out the better. McCreadie was able to pull out nearly a full second lead on Johnson when the yellow flew on lap 11. Chris Shultz looped his car in the second turn to cause the yellow.

On the restart Brett Hearn moved up from fifth to second, passing Johnson, Paine and Billy Decker. As the lap was recorded the yellow flew when Gary Tomkins spun in the second turn.

Hearn tried to hunt down McCreadie on the restart. McCreadie was again able to pull out an advantage of nearly a full second, leaving Hearn to battle for position with Johnson.

On lap 19 the yellow flew for Joe Beyea, who looped his number 121 in the third turn. The again bunched the leaders together. McCreadie showed true form and again stretched his lead to nearly .6 seconds at the checkered flag. On the last lap, in the last turn Johnson was able to complete a pass on Hearn for second following Hearn's attempt in the second turn to try for McCreadie on the high side. Hearn drifted high allowing Johnson to race under him, side-by-side to the finish line. Hearn recorded a third place finish followed by Paine and Decker.

ROLLING WHEELS: Only eight cars of 16 entered in the consolation race returned for the rained delayed event. Vic Coffey picked up top honors in this consolation race....The new Daktronics Scoreboard was put to work manually during the Outlaw races. The board functions automatically with the use of transponders in all modified races. The board was used during modified practice to show fast time and the top five in speeds...The track was some four seconds slower the second night. On Wednesday, during World of Outlaws time trials Danny Lasoski was fast timer with a time of 17.041 seconds, 132.035 MPH. On rain delayed the Outlaws re-time. On Thursday, Lasoski timed seventh, but fast time was set by Danny Schatz with a time of 20.783 seconds, 108.262 MPH.

The next event at Rolling Wheels will be the July 4, Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series race starting at 6 p.m. that evening. A complete program of DIRT Sportsman will fill out the event that night along with a great show of fireworks.
