HEARN TOPS DYNOMAX 150, BOYLE WINS PRO-STOCK MAIN

ELBRIDGE, NY...Day two of the Dynomax Performance Mufflers World Series of DIRT Track Racing saw the 358-Modified and Pro- stocks in the limelight. Brett Hearn fought off the advances of Steve Paine to take the 150-lap Sunoco Race Fuels Super DIRT Series victory. Jason Boyle topped the 30-lap ARANY DIRT Pro- Stock Super DIRT Series main event. Gary Tomkins bested the top 20 DIRT Modified Time Trialers in a special $2000 to win, 20-lap Dash.

Steve Paine and Frankie Caprara, who were the fast two time trialers the night before, paced the starting field of 30 cars to the starting line in the 358-Modified feature. Paine assumed the lead at the drop of the green followed closely by Chuck Bower, Caprara, Danny Johnson and Hearn.

The first yellow flag of the race flew on lap 10 when Rick Richner lost a front wheel exiting the fourth turn sending the field scrambling as he sat disabled on the front stretch. During this yellow Alex Hoag became the first to pit for fuel and returned to the back of the field.

Paine maintained his lead on the restart as Alan Johnson moved into third and began to challenge Bower for the runner up position. On lap 16, Alan was able to take second. Five laps later Hearn passed Danny Johnson for fourth. On lap 27 Hearn took third from Bower and began to close on Alan.

The yellow flew on lap 34 when Steve Hulsizer spun in the second turn. Paine now had Hearn on his rear bumper. It only took Hearn two laps, lap 39, to pass Paine for the lead. Hearn and Paine began to pull away from Alan in third. Danny Johnson ran fourth followed by Pete Bicknell in a distant fifth.

Lapped traffic became a factor by lap 50. On lap 64, Paine used the lapped car of Caprara to pass Hearn to retake the lead. The yellow flew for the third time on lap 74 as Matt Sheppard slowed in the first turn. Sheppard gathered his car together and continued in the race.

Paine built a 1.3 second lead over Paine as Alan ran some 11 second back from Paine. Bicknell ran into problems on lap 89 as he came off the power going down the main straight and turned right into the main pit area off turn one. Hearn retook the lead on lap 102.

On lap 106, the lead pair lapped Danny Johnson running in fifth. This left the front of the field; Hearn, Paine, Alan Johnson and Pat Ward on the lead lap. The yellow flew again on lap 110, when Tim Burnett slowed on the front stretch with a flat right rear tire.

This set up a long green period in which Hearn held off Paine through many lapped cars. Hearn was able to pull out a six second advantage over Paine during these closing laps. Hearn averaged 85.258 mph in taking the 150 lap victory. Paine came home second followed by Alan Johnson and Ward, all on the lead lap. Danny Johnson finished a lap down in fifth.

On his way to victory Hearn turned the fastest lap, on lap 140, of 22.881 seconds. The entire race took one hour, five minutes and 59 seconds to complete.

Gary Tomkins took over the lead on lap 17 from Brett Hearn in the special 20-lap DIRT Modified Dash. Tomkins averaged 93.017 mph in the green-to-checker run. Rounding out the top five were Billy Decker, Tim McCreadie, Chuck Bower and Hearn.

Sixty-three Pro-Stocks were on hand to qualify for the 30-lap ARANY feature event. The race started with Pete Stefanski and Jason Boyle on the front row. Boyle immediately took the lead at the drop of the green. Ten yellow flag periods slowed the race, lowing the average speed to a meager 31.605 mph.

Boyle would lead all 30 laps. Yellows flew on lap six for a spin in the second turn by Rick Holgate, lap 10 for a spin in turn four by Zack Shove. On lap 12 the yellow came out when Stefanski slowed on the back stretch. Lap 16 saw the yellow for the 2000 Mr. DIRT Pro-Stock Champion, Tom Kuck, who looped his mount in the third turn. Three consecutive yellows lap 20, 21, and 22 where thrown for spins by Beamer Guzzardi, Scott Kehr and debris. The final yellow, lap 27 flew when Butchie Irwin slide off the back stretch and had to be towed from the track. Boyle took the victory by .373 seconds over Chad Homan. Tommy Barron came home in third followed by Jipp Ortiz in a borrowed car from Dan Mayer. Lee Burnett rounded out the top five.
