'THUNDERFOOT' McCREADIE WINS HIS FIRST 200
ELBRIDGE, NY...Following his father's footsteps, young Tim McCreadie enter victory lane following the Paine Motorsports 200, during the FleetPride-Universal Joint Sales World Series of DIRT Track Racing Weekend'99. Tim's father, Bob, won the night before in the Advance Auto parts 358-Modified Super DIRT Series trail race at Rolling Wheels. Tim took home $10,000 for his victory.
Also winning on the afternoon was Rich Swarthout in the 30- lap Sunoco Race Fuels-Hoosier Tire Earl Axton Welding Sportsman feature. Paul Shermerhorn won the 6-lap Bonanza Bus feature to the delight of the packed house.
Time trails were run to determine the heat race starting line ups for the modified division. Bob McCreadie turned fast time with a lap of 22.124 seconds around the five-eighths mile oval. The top six drivers in times ran a four lap dash to determine the front three rows for the 200-lap main event.
Bob McCreadie and Danny Johnson, who finished first and second respectfully brought the 30 car starting field down for the green flag. Danny Johnson quickly took the lead followed by McCreadie, Steve Paine and Billy Decker. On lap six the yellow flew when Scott Boudinot looped his number 3b in front of the leaders at the exit of the fourth turn.
Johnson held strong on the restart, as Paine passed McCreadie for second. The field circled the oval with Johnson, Paine, McCreadie, Tim McCreadie and Brett Hearn running in the top five positions. Tim Made a move on his father, Bob, on lap 22, taking third place. Johnson and Paine were some ten car lengths ahead of the McCreadie duo. On lap 56 the yellow flew as Jimmy Horton slowed, coming to a stop in turn two.
It was pit stop time as twenty-one of the cars entered the pit area on lap 59. Brett Hearn, who was pitted near the first turn end of the pit area was the first driver back on the speedway, falling in behind a group of cars that choose not to pit and were now at the back of the lead lap. On the lap 62 restart Hearn was muscled out of first by Tim Fuller, aboard the B&F General Machine Olsen. Fuller opened up a lead after the field began to string out around the track. He could not catch either Ronnie Johnson or Pierre Dagenais to keep either driver down a lap before the next yellow flew on lap 89 as Bob McCreadie slowed in the first turn. McCreadie exited the speedway to the pits and was done for the day.
Fuller was now leading Tim McCreadie, A.J. Romano, who had the best pit stop back on lap 59, Billy Decker and Brett Hearn. On lap 111, the yellow came out again when Jimmy Phelps slowed to a stop on the front stretch. A few laps after the restart, Alan Johnson pulled his Mitsubishi sponsored Bicknell behind the pit wall and out of the race.
Brett Hearn surprised everyone with a fast pit stop, under green, on lap 131. Hearn slide through the pits, almost hitting a number of crew members. He safely stopped and the crew performed a gas-and-go, as Hearn though his fuel to be running low. He returned the race down one lap.
Fuller still held the lead until the score board showed just 50 laps remaining. Tim McCreadie made his move coming out of the second turn, passing Fuller for the lead on lap 151. As Fuller was entering the first turn on the next lap, his right front wheel flew off the car, bringing his car to a stop in the second turn. Fuller then reported to the pits where his crew took 12 laps to replace the entire right front assembly.
McCreadie held a comfortable lead over A.J. Romano and Billy Decker. A spin by Tom Sears Jr. in the first turn, lap 161 brought out a yellow and lost Sears one lap to the field as he had trouble refiring his car. On lap 169 Todd Milton slowed on the track to bring out the final yellow of the race. McCreadie held on for the victory followed by Romano, Decker, Danny Johnson and Doug Hoffman.
"I was lucky we ran time trials," commented an elated McCreadie. "I pulled number 60 when I came into the pits. That would have started us at the back of a heat and we may not have qualified," he concluded.
Danny Johnson's fourth place finish secured the modified track title for him at Rolling Wheels.
Rich Swarthout led all 30 laps of the DIRT Sportsman championship go, which saw some 70 cars attempt to qualify through heat races and consolations. Just four yellows slowed the event, three times for minor spins. The final yellow, lap 26 was for debris on the speedway in the fourth turn.
Following Swarthout across the finish line were series points leader Chris Shultz, Kevin Durea, third, in his best series finish this year. Rounding out the top five were Vince Vitale and Chad Brachmann.
The worst accident of the day took place during the sixth heat race, when Drew Fallis looped in the second turn and gathered up by series regular Randy Chrysler. Chrysler hurt his leg, but returned to run in the feature as a guaranteed starter. Notes: Some 270 cars participated in this year's FleetPride Universal Joint Sales World Series of DIRT Track Racing weekend. Over 600 laps were run on the speedway this weekend. The next major race for the DIRT Modifieds will be at Super DIRT Week in just one week at the new York State Fairground's mile.
