Weaver Wins

Brian Weaver snapped out of his Thunder Mountain doldrums at the right time as he handily won the first forty lap leg of the Gary’s U-Pull-It King’s Royal Modified series at the Thunder Mountain Speedway last Sunday night. The win was worth $2000 to the Decker Logging team and was the first win of the season here for the former track champion. Other winners on the card included Chad Cook in the 20 lap Sportsman feature, Denny Decker in the Pure Stock fifteen lapper and Rich Powell in the Four Cylinder Stock go.

Weaver started the feature in tenth by luck of the draw as Tommy McGurrin led the initial caution free nine laps before Weaver asserted himself. Once in front it was no contest as Weaver started opening up a comfortable margin over the rest of the field. The race’s first yellow didn’t occur until lap sixteen when pole sitter Brian Malcom got turned around on the backstretch. Six tries at getting lap seventeen in the books failed miserably and when it did finally happen Weaver once again proved he was the dominant car. The real race was going on behind Weaver and McGurrin as Brent Wilcox, Butch Tittle, Mike Colsten and Doug Worthing were going at it with major intensity. As the laps wound down, it was evident that no one was going to catch the high flying Weaver and everyone started scrambling for the best finishing spot. At the line it was Weaver well in front on McGurrin for the win. Colsten edged out Wilcox for the show spot while Jeff Bronson came from an early race tangle to get fifth. Rounding out the top ten were Title, George Kostelansky, Worthing, Sean Collins and Mike Nagel. The second round of this rich series will take place on July 4th at the Penn Can Speedway.

Chad Cook continued on his winning ways as he dominated the twenty-lap Sportsman feature. Starting tenth on the field, Cook charged to the front, taking the lead on lap five when Matt Smith broke a front axle. Once in front Cook opened up a gap between himself and second place Billy Spoonhower. When the checkers flew Cook had another win and Spoonhower had all he could do to hold off a determined Dan Vauter for second. Kevin Jordan came back from a mid race tangle to get fourth while Rick Holgate got his best Thunder Mountain Sportsman finish with a fifth.

Denny Decker got win number on at Thunder Mountain in 2002 as he led wire to wire from his outside pole starting spot and held off numerous late race challenges from point leader and Saturday night winner Mike Wilbur in a caution marred fifteen lap Pure Stock feature. Harry Uhl Jr. bounced back from a dismal Saturday night to claim third while Buck Mills and Chris Stull took home the rest of the top five.

Bob Doolittle led the first three laps of the Four Cylinder Stock feature before point leader Rich Powell took over and led the rest of the yellow flag free fifteen laps Shawn Mills got by late in the race to claim second while Doolittle claimed third. The rest of the top five included Mitch Hurlburt and Mike Darrow.
