Worthing, Cook And Stull Take Last Saturday Show At Thunder

&nbs;= p; Center Lisle, New York..Doug Worthing passed Rick Wilk at the midway point of the thirty lap Modified feature and went on to win his sixth feature win of the year on the last Saturday night show at the Thunder Mountain Speedway. Track champion in the Sportsman division. Chad Cook was the benefactor of a good re-draw and he used it to his advantage to win his eighth feature win of the year as he led wire to wire without a serious challenge. Former Pure Stock competitor Chris Stull sat in third and watched the contact between second place Ed McKernan and front runner Jamie Shea and took advantage of the result to grab off his first ever Street Stock win. Other winners on the seven race card saw Steve Hill for the 17th time in the Four Cylinder Modifieds, Dale Pitcher win his second in a row in the Mini Sprints, Don Moshier hold off Pure Stock champ Bill Rampe in their twenty lapper and Rich Powell edge out a narrow win in the fifteen lap Four Cylinder Stock class over Larry Colton. All of this took place on Frito-Lay and Olenski Memorial night at the track.

&= nbsp; Worthing, who started fourth in this non-points event sat back and watched the duel in front of him between Rick Wilk, Mike Colsten and Jeremy Smith and waited for something to happen. He didn t have to wait long as on lap eleven Colsten and Wilk made contact with Colsten going around in turn four. This put Wilk at the point with Worthing along side. When the race went green again, it was all Worthing as he asserted himself into the top spot and never was seriously challenged after that although Paul Jensen got close during the later stages of the race. When the checkers flew it was Worthing ahead of Jensen for the win with Colsten coming from the back of the pack to get third followed by Wilk and a strong run by Billy Huff in the Mike Goodwin owned mount in fifth. Both fifth place Billy Huff and fifteenth place J. R. Hurlburt earned $205 from the Olenski family for their efforts

&= nbsp; For the second straight race, Chad Cook was the benefactor of a great re-draw as he pulled the pole and led the entire distance in the Sportsman twenty lapper. Mike Decker was the early chaser but there was no catching the 2001 track champ. Decker then had his hands full with Rick Wilk who pressured Decker for a number of laps before finally getting by. Wilk however had nothing for Cook and had to settle for second. Decker was a solid third followed by Brian Payne in fourth and invader Tim Maye in fifth.

&= nbsp; The twenty lap Street Stock lap feature had all the makings of another Shea-McKernan one-two finish after Shea went to the topside of McKernan on lap fourteen. Shea, who started in ninth, had worked his way through the field to McKernan who had started second and had led every lap until that point. On lap eighteen that all changed. Upon exiting turn two McKernan made contact with Shea, turning the track champ around. For his efforts, McKernan was sent to the rear and a patient Chris Stull inherited the top spot followed by rookie Ken Hammond. Hammond was unable to do anything with Stull over the final two laps and Stull crossed the finish line a car length ahead for his first ever Street Stock win. Hammond had a great second place run followed by Charlie Fulton in third, Matt Roberts in solidly for fourth and Harold Humphrey rounded out the top five. Shea and McKernan wound up thirteenth and fourteenth respectively.

&= nbsp; The twenty lap Pure Stock feature was on of the best of the season as twenty-four cars started and twenty finished with only a couple of minor yellows to slow the progress of the event. Pole sitter Bryan Dodge led the first two circuits before being passed by two-time winner Don Moshier. Once in front, Moshier had his hands full with point champ Bill Rampe, Skyline Raceway Pure Stock champ Harry Uhl Jr., Jim Cornell Jr. and Dodge. Rampe tried many times to get under Moshier but each time Moshier was equal to the task and took home his third win of the year. Rampe had to settle for second followed by Uhl, Cornell and Dodge.

&= nbsp; The fifteen lap Four Cylinder Stock feature was also a barnburner between point champ Rich Powell and invader Larry Colton. The front running duo ran side by side for many laps before Powell finally edged in front late in the race. Five time winner Shawn Mills was lurking in third waiting for one of the pair to skip a beat but neither did while veteran Four Cylinder runner Harold Humphrey was also there to put the pressure on as was the ageless veteran Jackie Soper. When the checkers flew they finished precisely in that order.

&= nbsp; 1999 and 2000 track champion Lee Dewitt returned for the first time this season in the Four Cylinder Modifieds but even he couldn t stop the machine called Steve Hill. Hill, who started eighth had the lead by lap eight and never looked back. Dewitt got to second breaking the string of ten straight one-two finishes of Hill and Scott Allen. Allen had to settle for third while Cliff Pierce and Alan Bush completed the top five.

&= nbsp; Dale Pitcher got a late start in the season at Thunder Mountain but he s more that made up for it as he coped his second fifteen-lap Mini Sprint feature in a row. Points runner-up Rick Wust was second followed by Darl Ellis in third.

&= nbsp; That concluded the regular 2001 season of racing at the Thunder Mountain Speedway in what could be called the best ever there. Plans for the banquet will be announced shortly as will plans for the 2002 racing campaign. The staff and management of Thunder Mountain Speedway would like to thank all the competitors and fans for supporting us this year and we ll see you at the banquet or on opening day 2002.
