FOUR TIME UTICA-ROME RACEWAY TRACK CHAMPION
PAUL JENSEN WINS FIRST OF THE 1998 SEASON
VERNON, NY...Four time Utica-Rome Raceway NASCAR Modified Track Champion
Paul Jensen recorded his first feature win of the season on the
“Electrifying Fast Half-Mile Track” last Sunday night. The win for the
veteran Edmeston, N.Y. driver came in a wild affair that featured six
lead changes in the opening ten laps. Jensen earned $1,500 for the win
in the 25 lap feature race. Jensen started from the 12th starting
position and took the lead for good on lap 10.
Ron Holmes came from the 17th starting position to finish second.
J.J. Michaels worked up from the 18th starting spot to finish third. Jim
Rothwell earned his best finish of the season in fourth, while veteran
Roger Phelps had another strong effort to finish fifth. Doug Fuller,
John Barker, Lance Lauffenburger, Steve Hulsizer and Jeff Kotary crossed
the finish line in positions sixth through tenth respectively.
Jeremy Smith, Kotary and Rothwell were the winners of the NASCAR
Modified qualifying heat races. Gus Schmidt led the way in the last
chance consolation event.
Tony Buffa won his second NASCAR Sportsman feature race of the
season last Sunday night. Buffa was followed by Willy Decker, Tim Mayne,
Jack Miller and Jim Smith.
Joe Palmer claimed his second win of 1998 last Sunday in the Street
Stock ranks. Palmer won out over Bill Knapp, Don Newell, Dave Moyer and
Ed Kotary.
Veteran Dave Mannise won his third Pure Stock feature of the season
last Sunday night. Mannise was followed on this occasion by Rick Dote,
Herm Staats, Rick Trexler and Jeff Thorp.
Action will resume this Sunday, June 28 at Utica-Rome Raceway.
Added attractions will be a $1,500 to win special for the Eastern
Limited Super Sprints and a Demolition Derby. The NASCAR Modifieds,
Sportsman, Street Stocks and Pure Stocks will also be in action. Race
