DIRT DIARY: FLORIDA TOUR 2001 - Day #8 (Thr. Feb. 15)
HEARN SETS RECORD, FULLER ENDS JET'S STREAK IN VOLUSIA TWIN-BILL
BARBERVILLE,FL...Brett Hearn found his way into victory lane for the third time and Tim Fuller scored his first-ever Florida Tour feature win as DIRT Motorsports returned to Volusia Speedway Park on Thursday for competition during the 30th Winternationals.
In the rare DIRT doubleheader, Hearn led all but two laps to win the fog-delayed main held over from Tuesday while Fuller mirrored Hearn's finish and stayed in front for the final 28 circuits to capture the 30-lap nightcap.
Hearn's eighth career big-block triumph at Volusia pushes his overall total to 10 in the 'Sunshine State' and moves him past Pennsylvanian Kenny Brightbill atop the all-time Modified win list.
"This new TEO car has just been unbelievable since we've been down here," said Hearn, after posting his third straight A-Main victory in seven days. He also won a special 12-lap dash in convincing fashion to sandwich his first two feature wins at East Bay Raceway to kick off the 2001 Florida Tour in the Bay Area.
"But a few more changes will be needed before we come back out for the heat. The track changed so much during the first five laps I was surprised the car adjusted so well," Hearn added.
Pole-sitter Tim McCreadie jumped out to an early lead before the first of five yellow flags flew for his father Bob McCreadie after an anxious Tony Stewart ran over the side of the no. 9 Kinney Drugs-Syracuse Frame Service/Troyer machine as the pair jockeyed out of turn two. Although McCreadie later returned to the track one lap down, Stewart parked the no. 20 GE Sealants & Adhesives/TEO entry for the remainder.
Hearn wasted little time on the ensuing restart, ducking under younger McCreadie's no. 56 Finch's Trucking/TEO mount exiting turn four to forge the final lead change. With 10 laps complete Hearn led McCreadie, Jimmy Horton, Danny Johnson and Doug Hoffman, and when the checkered flag waved only Johnson had improved by one position among the top-5 runners.
New York invader Fuller crossed the line sixth ahead of Jamie Mills, Ward, J.R. Heffner and Vic Coffey.
Heat one winner Bob McCreadie buckled into his back-up car to start the 30-lap nightcap yet he was able to hold back front row partner Hearn for only one lap before the no. 3 Budweiser Racing/TEO car swept around high between turns three and four. McCreadie lasted just one more lap before the rear-end collapsed to force him pitside for the duration.
Fuller took advantage of his restart position outside of Hearn and cruised past when the green flag reappeared. At the halfway mark Fuller led Hearn, Horton, Stewart and Ward.
Contact between Stewart and Horton incurred the second and final caution period as Horton's debut of the no. 51m Miles Concrete/Olsen ride went up in smoke on lap 16. Stewart's right-rear tire went flat with the yellow lights still on although this time he returned to pick up the back of the pack and continue his relentless pace.
The final five laps were some of the most dramatic to date as the battle for runner-up laurels was all that Fuller had left for his closest challengers. Danny Johnson was the main reason as he waited until the final circuit to blast from fourth to second as the leaders wove their way through traffic.
"Its extra special winning for the first time in Florida," said Fuller, who became the 26th winner in 75 Florida features held since 1978. His 17th career DIRT big-block triumph was worth $2,000.
"Anytime you can pass Bob and Brett that's pretty special, too. The top was really fast and I knew nobody could get by me low when the inside slowed up. I started trying to conserve tires at the end but it still got a little harry with all the traffic out there," Fuller added.
Fuller easily out-distanced the field for his first-ever Florida Tour triumph while Johnson edged Ward, Hearn and Doug Hoffman in the near three-wide sprint to the line. Coffey, Tim McCreadie, Mills, Frankie Caprara and Heffner rounded out the top-10 while Stewart rallied back to place 11th at the stripe.
Through four of the six series races scheduled at East Bay and Volusia, defending points champion Hearn(230) tops the current Florida Tour standings followed by Johnson(208), Tim McCreadie(194), Fuller(188) and 2000 runner-up Mills(180).
Open-wheel action continues Friday at Volusia with a 30-lap DIRT Modified main headlining the annual Winternationals program.
