FULLER AND PHELPS SPLIT, BUTTON WINS SUNOCO GOLD
WEEDSPORT, NY...Tim Fuller, from Edwards, NY, won the rain delayed DIRT Modified feature from June 15, while Jimmy Phelps claimed his first Cayuga County Fair checkers winning the regular 35-lap DIRT Modified main. In the Sportsman division a full field was on hand for Round Three of the Sunoco Race Fuels Super DIRT Sportsman Series. Mike Button returned to his roots and using the high line around the speedway claimed the $1,000 win. In other action Mike Emhof won the CNY Mini-Sprint main and former modified-supermodified pilot, Sam Carista, returned to behind the wheel to win the Pit Stop Convenience Stores 4-cylinder enduro.
In the rain delayed 35-lap main event for the Modifieds A.J. Romano led until lap 26 when Billy Decker took the lead. Decker's lead was short lived as he popped the motor on his number 91 and retired to the infield leaving Tim Fuller with the lead.
Fuller continued on his way to claim the victory over Danny Johnson, Romano, Bob McCreadie and Gary Tomkins. Only three yellows slowed the race all for minor scrambles. The most contact came on lap 22 when Alan Johnson went high and collected Tim McCreadie and Joe Beyea. All three cars were in contention until that incident.
In the regular 35-lap feature Ray Bliss Jr. looked to have the field under control. Then on lap eight Jimmy Phelps slipped by and soar out to a commanding lead. An exciting battle for second developed between Bliss Jr., Tim McCreadie, Gary Tomkins and Tom Sears Jr.. Tim Mccreadie made his move to take second with just five laps remaining in the race. Bliss stubbornly held onto third until the final lap when Tomkins took the position. Bliss Jr. came home in fourth followed by Danny Johnson in his small block.
The 30-lap Sunoco Race Fuels Super DIRT Series race was riddled with yellow flags, some eight in all. Donnie Wetmore Jr. was the early leader of the race. Wetmore Jr. lost the lead to Mike Button on lap 17. Button cruised home the winner followed by Wetmore Jr., Tim Sears, Greg Doust and Randy Chrysler.
Twenty-six CNY Mini-Sprints were on hand for a special appearance. Mike Emhof took command of the 15-lap race on lap 12. Prior to that Dennis Fink and Bryan Howland had led most of the laps. Only one yellow flew, that coming on the first lap when two cars flipped in separate incidents. Doug Norrie turned upside down on the front chute, while Dubby Woodruff lost his number 27 in the fourth turn. Woodruff righted his car and continued on his way. Norrie's car was too badly damaged to continue.
Howland gave chase after Emhof, finishing a close second, in lapped traffic. Matt Norrie came home a distant third behind a number of lapped machine. Cory Sparks and Jared Fink rounded out the top five finishers.
This Sunday will be Baldwin Communications Night at the speedway. Race time will be at 7 p.m., with gates opening at 5 p.m. sharp. The Cayuga County Fair Speedway is located just off Exit 40 of the NYS Thruway, east of the village of Weedsport, on Route 31.
