FULLER WINS BIG AT CAYUGA COUNTY, BURNETT AND BOWMAN BRING HOME THE GOLD
WEEDSPORT, NY...Tim Fuller, from Edwards, NY, won the 35-lap Brewster Cleaners/WIXT TV 9 Feature last Sunday afternoon at the Cayuga County Fair Speedway. Jim Bowman handily won the 20-lap DIRT Sportsman feature, while Lee Burnett held off the advances of Patrick Hobbs to claim the 20-lap Pro-Stock main.
Gary Tomkins, starting in third, quickly charged into the lead as the pack of 26 cars entered the second turn on the opening lap. Tomkins then proceeded to extend his lead over Dave Axton and Danny Johnson. The first yellow flew on lap eight when Scott Prentice made contact with the inside second turn concrete. Prentice was towed into the pits and the race resumed. Danny Johnson was showing battle scars as the right front shock tower broke and the shock absorber was flopping around.
Tomkins continued to lead and again began to stretch out an advantage over Axton and Johnson. On lap 14 the yellow flew when Bob McCreadie looped in the first turn. On the restart Johnson drifted high in the fourth turn, forcing Axton high to the outside of the turn. This allowed Johnson to grab second. However one lap later, Jimmy Phelps blew by both Johnson and Axton to take the runner up position. Axton's race came to an end as he slowed down the back stretch on lap 20, forcing starter Dave Farney to throw the yellow.
The restart saw Tim McCreadie and Tim Fuller come together in turn three. This sent McCreadie looping to the high side of the turn, collecting the cars of Mike Ward, Jim Burke, Tom Sears Jr. and A.J. Romano. All were able to continue except for Sears Jr. who suffered frame damage to his car.
Fuller, who was running sixth, now began to creep through the field. He took third on the restart and, when Danny Johnson drifted high in the second turn on lap 29, Fuller was there to take second from him. With just two laps remaining Fuller pulled alongside of leader Gary Tomkins. With the aid of a lapped car, used as a pick, Fuller was able to power by Tomkins for the lead and the win. Tomkins finished second followed by the wounded Johnson in third. Jimmy Phelps and Pat Ward rounded out the top five finishers.
Heavy dust was the problem at the start of the 20-lap DIRT Sportsman feature. The water truck lost a wheel in the first turn and was unavailable to help cut down on the dust. Following two straight yellow flag laps, Wade Czymmek emerged the leader. That did not last long as Jim Bowman charged into the lead on lap four. Bowman then proceeded to build a full straight away lead and take the victory. Eldon Payne Jr. managed to pass Czymmek in the closing laps to claim second. Donnie Wetmore Jr., Czymmek and Ryan Phelps rounded out the top five.
The 20-lap DIRT Pro-stock feature saw Dave McCready (no relationship to either Bob or Tim) take the lead at the drop of the green. On lap three the yellow flew when Jeremy Clark spun in the second turn. He returned to the back of the pack and the race resumed. One lap later Clark was involved in a melee with Dave Shultz in the fourth turn. Both cars returned to the back of the pack.
The restart saw Lee Burnett pass McCready for the lead. On lap five Patrick Hobbs inched by McCready for second. Hobbs then cut down on the gap held by Burnett, but on lap 17 Burnett slipped in the fourth turn and allowed Burnett to stretch out his lead again. Burnett took the checkers followed by Hobbs, McCready, Fred Dennis, Tommy Barron and Zack Shove to round out the top five.
CCFS Notes: Controversy erupted in the pit area following the modified feature over the touching incident between McCreadie and Fuller...The 4 cylinder enduro cars were on hand for an exhibition only. Only two cars in this division were ready for opening day.
This Sunday Cayuga County will be dark for Mother's Day. Racing does not return to the little three-eighths mile oval until Sunday, May 26, when the 11th annual DIRT Motorsports Hall of Fame Inductions take place in the afternoon. That night the 100-lap DIRT Modified feature will be an Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series race for DIRT Modifieds. The sportsman cars are also slated for this 6 p.m. start.
On Sunday, May 19, Rolling Wheels Raceway starts their 2002 racing season with the DIRT Challenge Cup program originally scheduled for Sunday, April 28. The May 19th program is being rescheduled into late July or early August.
The Cayuga County Fair Speedway is located just minutes from NYS Thruway exit 40, on Route 31 in the village of Weedsport, NY.
