DANNY JOHNSON TOPS CAYUGA COUNTY

WEEDSPORT, NY...Following a number of weeks on the road and weeks without winning, Danny Johnson, from Rochester, NY, returned to victory lane in a big way last Sunday claiming the 35-lap DIRT Modified feature at the .375 mile Cayuga County Fair Speedway. Joe Beyea topped off the weekend with his second DIRT Sportsman win at Cayuga County. He won Saturday at Canandaigua Speedway. Tony Buffa remains dominate in the Dwarf Cars winning his 15-lap main. Topping off the evening was a victory by Bill Juhl in the 20-lap Pit Stop Convenience Stores Enduro.

Dave Axton was the early leader in the DIRT Modified 35-lap main event. Axton led Tom Sears Jr., Pat ward, Danny Johnson and Jim Gabriel Jr.. On lap seven, Johnson passed around the outside of Axton for the lead through the third turn. Ward followed suit, passing Axton for second just two laps later The yellow flew on lap 11 when Vince Vitale and Scott Prentice came together in the third turn. Both cars were retired to the pits. On the restart Johnson led the way as now both Tim Fuller and Tim McCreadie took second and third. McCreadie blew by Fuller and began a race long challenge to Johnson.

Both Johnson and McCreadie pulled away from the field as McCreadie would pull along side of the Johnson Sweeteners' Plus machine on several occasions.

Johnson crossed the finish line with a 1.272 second victory over McCreadie. Gary Tomkins moved into third with just three laps remaining in the race. This pushed Fuller back to fourth. Pat Ward finished in fifth. The feature took just over 14 minutes to complete.

The 20-lap DIRT Sportsman feature was slowed by four yellows. Jim Bowman was the early leader, holding off eventual winner Joe Beyea. The first yellow flew on lap two when John Juhl looped his number 2p in the first turn. Bowman held strong on the restart. The second yellow flew two laps later when Greg Doust slowed on the track with a flat tire. The first attempt at a restart had to be aborted. On the second attempt Beyea blew by Bowman for the lead. A long green flag session would last some ten laps. On lap 14 the yellow was out again, this time for Jim Spano slowing on the track.

Beyea held command of the race, but Steve Gray was able to pass Bowman on the restart to take second. Gray could not close the gap between himself and Beyea. One finial yellow, coming on lap 17 when Scott Binns looped his number 57X in the first turn, slowed the race.

Beyea came home with a .322 second victory over Gray. Justin Haers pushed his number 90 into third at the line followed by Bowman and Tom Juhl.

The Dwarf event saw outside pole man, Troy VanAllen, take the lead. On lap eight he lost the lead to Tony Buffa, who had started 12 in the field. Buffa then blasted away from VanAllen to a ten car advantage. Ken Gamlin, Darin Forbes and Dan Boyce rounded out the top five finishers at the line.

There are only three weeks of racing remaining at the Cayuga County Fair Speedway in 2001. This Sunday, August 19 will see Sterling Trucks of Syracuse in the VIP Tower for a regular Three Star program featuring the DIRT Modifieds, Sportsman and Enduro cars. Race time will begin at 7 p.m. sharp. The Cayuga County Fair Speedway is located just one mile east of the village of Weedsport, NY, on Route 31.
