THE "DOCTOR" WINS; SHEPPARD AGAIN AT CAYUGA COUNTY
WEEDSPORT, NY...Danny Johnson just keeps mastering one dirt track at a time. Last Sunday he took top honors in the 35-lap DIRT Modified main event at the Cayuga County fair Speedway. Matt Sheppard picked up the victory in the 20-lap DIRT Sportsman feature passing two drivers on the last lap.
Joining the action for the evening were the quick little Tobias Slingshots. J.J. Caurcy, the Slingshot touring points leader, took the win in both the heat and the 12-lap feature. Finally Tim Hettis returned to victory lane, winning the 40-lap Pit Stop Convenience Stores Enduro.
The 35-lap DIRT Modified feature saw Todd Milton take the lead from his outside pole starting spot. Milton began to build a respectable lead over Ray Bliss jr., Danny Johnson and Chuck Bower. The green flag conditions lasted just past the halfway point in the race, when Jim Burke slowed to a stop in the fourth turn.
The restart was not as kind to Milton, as first Danny Johnson passed him on lap 22 and Chuck Bower got him on lap 24. Danny Johnson, better known to many race fans as the "Doctor", then stretched out a lead until lap traffic forced the leaders to run together.
Bower continued to chase Johnson all the way to the checkers. Alan Johnson, in his Mitsubishi number 1 finished third, followed by Tim McCreadie and Milton.
Heat race wins went to Milton, Johnson and Bower. The consolation race was won by Jeremie Corcoran.
The 20-lap DIRT Sportsman feature seemed to be running rather smooth when, on lap 9 the yellow flew as Justin Haers slowed on the back stretch. The restart saw leader Bob Haws, drop kicked by another car and sent spinning in the first turn. He was collected by Lance Dusett, Bob Henry Jr. and Mike Lavarnway. This left second place, Joe Beyea as the leader.
The next lap saw yet another yellow. Finally the field got in motion again with Beyea leading Steve Gray, Matt Sheppard, Tom Juhl and Jim Spano. The final yellow flew on lap 17, as Mark Camuso slowed with a flat tire.
This set up a charge to the finish line. In the third turn on the final lap Matt Sheppard made quick work of his foes, passing both the second and first place cars in one fell swoop. Sheppard took the victory followed by Beyea, Gray, Jim Spano and John Plumb. Heat wins went to Haws, Geoff Carner, and Beyea.
The consolation race went to Jermeie Corcoran.
In Slingshot action J.J. Caurcy won the main event by a full
half track length over Brian Thomas. Caurcy also easily handled
his heat race.
This Sunday will be River Forest Campgrounds and Skate-N-
Place night at the speedway. added to the regular bill of DIRT
Modifieds/358-Modifieds, Sportsman and Pit Stop Convenience
Stores Enduro will be the return of the Dwarf cars.
Race time will be at 7 p.m. sharp, so as to allow for a fast night of racing action.
