"THUNDERFOOT" WINS AT CAYUGA COUNTY, POP SHOWS SPORTSMANSHIP

WEEDSPORT, NY...You'd have to come away impressed with the McCreadie family last Sunday at the Cayuga County Fair Speedway. Son Tim McCreadie took the 35-lap feature win, while father Bob showed a lot of class, penalizing himself for aggressive driving.

In sportsman action Matt Sheppard took the win, while Bill Juhl won the 40-lap enduro. Tony Buffa won his second Dwarf Car feature of the year at Cayuga County in a special appearance by these tiny automobiles.

The 35-lap DIRT Modified feature saw Vince Vitale use his outside pole starting position to grab up the early lead. NYAAD Rookie candidate Jeff Brownell took over the lead on lap three with a daring pass in the third turn.

Bob McCreadie, running third, was able to complete a pass on Vitale and pass Brownell for the front spot on lap five. He looked to have the feature in hand when a charge by Chuck Bower in his Currier Plastics car forced Bob to drive harder. Bower pulled along side of McCreadie on lap 10, and completing a pass one lap later for the lead. On lap 13, as the duo exited the fourth turn they touched bumpers upsetting Bower's car the most. Again through the second turn they touched, resulting in Bower looping out. McCreadie, on his own and without and orders from officials, headed to the rear of the field along with Bower. This left Tim McCreadie in the lead of the race followed by Ray Bliss Jr., Danny Johnson, Pat Ward, and Jeff Brownell.

Johnson passed Bliss and took off after McCreadie, but he could not close the five car gap that separated them on the track. A second yellow, lap 24, flew when Jermey Corcoran looped into the infield off the front straight. This bunched the field together.

The restart saw Johnson lose second to Pat Ward in his Finch's Logging car. Two other brief yellows kept the field tightly bunched and made for some exciting racing.

Tim held off Ward, Alan Johnson, Danny Johnson and Gary Tomkins for the victory.

In sportsman action a number of yellows slowed the race. Seven times the yellow flag flew in the 20-lap affair, which saw a late race sparing of James Spano and Matt Sheppard for the lead. On lap 15, Spano made it easy on Sheppard, dropping out of the race and seemingly out of fuel.

Sheppard took the win followed by Rich Swarthout. Consolation winner Steve Gray charged through the accidents and field to finish third. Tyke Morris, who the day before lost his step father, came home in fourth. Tom Juhl rounded out the top five.

The Dwarf cars were on hand for a 15-lap feature event, as part of their traveling tour in 2000. Pole sitter Carl Crawford took the lead of the race at the drop of the green, only to lose the very next circuit to outside pole man Bill Teliska. Teliska was only able to lead two laps before Wayne Younglove blew into the front position.

Lap-after-lap both Teliska and Tony Buffa hounded leader Younglove. Finally on lap 14, Buffa blasted into the lead of the race. It was now a one lap shoot out with Buffa taking the victory. Wayne Younglove, Troy VanAllen, Ken Gamlen and Bill Teliska rounded out the top five finishers.

This coming Sunday the Slingshots will be joining the regular weekly action of Modifieds, Sportsman and Enduros. Race time is pegged at to 7 p.m. for Sunday. It will be the first appearance of the slingshots this year at Cayuga County.
