D.J.'S BIG BLOCK ROCKS THE 'PORT
WEEDSPORT, NY...Danny Johnson, who started the year off behind the wheel of a small-block at Cayuga County Fair Speedway, changed over to his Sweetner's Plus big-block Chevrolet and won, hand's down, last Sunday at the Cayuga County night opener. Also picking up wins on the evening were Matt Sheppard in the DIRT Sportsman ranks, his second win in as many nights, having won at Canandaigua Speedway the night before, and Tony Buffa in a special Dwarf Car race. Tim Hettis picked up the 40-lap enduro feature win sponsored by Pit Stop Convenience Stores.
Gary Tomkins rocketed into the lead at the drop of the green flag from his outside pole starting spot. Pole sitter, Jimmy Phelps, pressured Tomkins from behind, but was unable to attempt a pass as the yellow flew when Tom Sears Jr. coasted to a stop on the back stretch on lap two.
The restart saw Tomkins hold off Phelps. Chuck Bower, Tim Fuller and Tim McCreadie were running third through fifth in a battle of their own. On lap 12 the yellow flew again when Tim Fuller had a wheel rim load up with mud, stopped in the fourth turn. He returned to the track but immediately fell out of the event with his B&F General Machine Modified.
Phelps was able to complete his pass for the lead when Tomkins went wide in the third turn. Tomkins's move to the high side also allowed Danny Johnson to nose into second, as Tomkins fell back to third.
In a heated battle for the lead Johnson was able to pass Phelps on lap 24. In the heat of the battle, Phelps made contact with the inside Jersey Barrier in turn one and looped his car out on lap 25, while running second. This allowed Tomkins to gain back second followed by Chuck Bower, Billy Decker, Tim McCreadie and Pat Ward.
"I have to thank my crew for this one," stated Johnson. "They worked hard to prepare this car, as did Billy Colton from Troyer."
Johnson easily came home with the win followed by Chuck Bower, Tomkins, Decker and Tim McCreadie.
In sportsman action Matt Sheppard looked to completely dominate the field wining the 20-lap main event by winning by nearly a full straight away following a late race caution. Sheppard lead all but the first four laps, which have to be credited to pole sitter, Tom Mettler. Lance Dusett finished a distant second to Sheppard. Rounding out the top five in the feature were James Spano, Rich Swarthout, fresh off a knee operation and Mettler.
The Dwarf cars made their first appearance of the year at the speedway. Some 18 car took the green flag, with Tony Buffa, who started eighth, taking the lead on lap five from Dan Boyce. Buffa was pressured in the late stages of the race by Troy VanAllen, but VanAllen was never close enough to complete a pass on Buffa.
Following Buffa home were VanAllen, Pat Pontello, Boyce and Ken Gamlen.
This Sunday Cayuga County will be dark for Mother's Day. Racing will return on May 21, to the Rolling Wheels Raceway for an afternoon special event featuring DIRT Modifieds, Sportsman and Pro-stocks.
Racing returns to Cayuga County on May 28 for the annual Hall of Fame 100 lap Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series for Modifieds. Joining the Modifieds that evening will be the sportsman in a regular 20-lap feature. Race time on May 28 is scheduled for 6 p.m., with time trials beginning at 5 p.m..
