McCreadie, Comfort, Homan Are First Timers At Canandaigua
CANANDAIGUA, NY...After three second place finishes this
season, Tim McCreadie was able to take his Finch's Logging number
56 into victory lane at Canandaigua Speedway. It was McCreadie's
first win of the year at the track, in what many say was the best
race at the speedway in years. Sportsman 2000 Track Champion,
Karl Comfort also returned to his winning ways picking up the
victory in the 20-lap Sportsman feature.
Full fender winners at the track last Saturday included Chad
Homan in the Pro-stocks, his first win of the season also. In the
Street Stocks the two 10-lap wins went to Mike Welch and James
Henry.
The 35-lap DIRT Modified feature saw Ray Bliss Jr. use his
pole starting position to take the lead over Rich Swarthout,
Chuck Hebing and Jim Gabriel Jr.. The first yellow flew on lap
three when newcomer Jeff Hoffman tangled with Scott Ridley in the
fourth turn. Both cars returned to the race.
On the restart, Swarthout blasted into first and began to
establish a lead as Billy Decker came charging through the field,
into second, in pursuit of Swarthout. Both Swarthout and Decker
then built a five car advantage over Hebing. By lap ten, however,
Danny Johnson, running in third, and Tim McCreadie, in sixth,
seemed to be the fast cars on the speedway. McCreadie moved into
fourth by lap eleven and began a two car battle with Johnson for
the third position.
The yellow flew on lap 15 when Gary Farnsworth looped his
car in the first turn. This would bunch up the field and make for
a four car race at the front. The restart proved not a successful
as Dave Axton had his drive line lock up and he slide across the
start-finish line. The restart saw the rookie, Swarthout, hanging
tough, taking the low line while Decker raced high.
By lap 19 and 20, the front two cross the line side-by-side
on each lap. Finally on lap 21 Decker was able to nose ahead at
the line, for the lead. But the challenge for the front spot was
just about to start!
On lap 23, McCreadie passed Swarthout for second and took
off after Decker. On lap 24, on the backstretch, in traffic,
McCreadie used a lapped car as a pick and passed Decker for the
lead. Steve Paine now entered the picture, taking third from
Swarthout. Paine passed Decker on lap 28 and took off after
McCreadie.
On lap 31, the yellow flew for the final time when
Farnsworth exited the speedway surface in the first turn. This
placed Paine directly on McCreadie's rear bumper. McCreadie
mustard enough power to take the win, with Paine just thousandths
of seconds behind in second. Gary Tomkins passed Decker on the
final lap to claim third. Decker came home in fourth followed by
Johnson nipping Bob McCreadie at the finish line for fifth.
The 20-lap Sportsman feature got off to a rough start as the
yellow flag flew on the first lap for Mike Majors, who stopped in
the fourth turn. Paul Guererri was the leader, with Dave Just in
second.
The yellow flew again, on lap three, for a major four car
pile up in the fourth turn. On the restart Ricky VanNeil was able
to pass Just for second. The eventual winner, Karl Comfort, was
now in fifth and moving up fast. By lap eight Comfort was in
third behind Guererri and VanNeil, when the yellow flew.
Guererri continued to lead until lap 14, when Comfort, also
using a lapped car as a pick, trapped Guererri and moved into
first. VanNeil's great race was about to come to an end as he
stopped in the fourth turn on lap 16 to bring out the yellow.
Comfort held on for the win with Justin Haers closing in
second. Steve Gray finished third followed by Guererri and Eldon
Payne Jr..
The 20-lap Pro-stock feature saw Tiger Chapman build a
sizable lead at the start of the race. However after three
consecutive yellow flag laps, laps three, four and five,
Chapman's big lead vanished. All three cautions were for either
debris of incidents taking place in the third turn.
Chad Homan took command of the race on the lap five restart.
One last yellow flew on lap nine when two cars came together on
the front straight.
Homan raced the final eleven laps, building an advantage on
each circuit to claim victory. Mike Cooper moved into second on
lap 10 and held on for the position in the end. Jon Miller, Jason
Boyle and Billy Brown rounded out the top five finishers.
Two Street Stock features were run. each being ten laps.
Mike Welch took the lead in the first 10-lapper at the drop of
the green and held on for the win. Only one yellow flag flew, lap
five, for a spin by Jim Cologgi.
The second 10-lapper saw Leroy Lewis lead the entire
distance until the second turn of the last lap, when James Henry
powered under him for the win. This event went green-to-checkers
without a yellow.
