Don Scarborough Grabs Win At Devil's Bowl

Wed, 16 Aug 2000 21:07:14 -0400

WEST HAVEN, VT. - After spending the first two months of the season ride

hopping and contemplating his future, it looks like Don Scarborough is

serious about racing again. Scarborough, the 1999 overall Champlain Valley

Racing Association point champion, drove to his first win of the season in

the 30-lap 358 modified feature at Devil’s Bowl Speedway.

Scarborough had four wins at the Bowl last season, but during the

winter, there were rumors of his retirement from racing. On his infrequent

visits to Devil’s Bowl in June and July this season, he had driven the car

owned by John Harrison. But Scarborough is now back behind the wheel of his

own modified, and displaying the aggressive style that Devil’s Bowl Speedway

fans have gotten used to.

Brian Whittemore started on the pole and led the first eight laps of the

feature, but it didn’t take long for Scarborough, who had started eighth, to

get into contention. The Brandon Bandit was fifth after five laps, and then

rocketed past both Gene Munger and Chuck Higley to move into third. That

proved to be a good place to be when the first caution flag of the race came

out on lap nine.

On the subsequent restart, Scarborough charged around Whittemore to get

the lead. Rookie Tim LaDuc, who had started 10th, had also snaked through

the field quickly, and moved into the No. 2 position on lap 11. The second

caution of the race, on lap 14, put LaDuc right on Scarborough’s rear

bumper, but that proved to be as close as he would get.

Once the green came back out, Scarborough was hooked up and flying, and

used lapped traffic to leave LaDuc in second place. Jim Ryan finished

third, his fifth top-five performance of the season, while Whittemore was

fourth, the best finish of his short CVRA modified career. Munger nailed

down the No. 5 spot, with overall point leader Dave Camara sixth.

Completing the top 10 were Harrison, Sput Shaw, Bob Savoie and Randy Howe.

Pete Kimball picked up his third victory of the year in the pro-street

stock feature, which was extended to 30 laps from its normal 20-lap

distance. Jack Swinton set the early pace in the caution-plagued event, but

gave up the top spot to Mike Haines, who was looking for his first win of

the season, on lap eight. Kimball began his charge when the field finally

put together some green flag laps, moving from seventh to third in a span of

four laps.

He then got around Mike Paquin for second on lap 17, and took the lead

away from Haines one lap later. Two late restarts closed the pack up, but

Kimball was able to hold off Haines for the victory. Paquin finished third,

with Joe Santoro fourth and Matt Rich fifth.

Curtis Condon charged from his 13th starting position to record his

first win of the season in the hobby stock division, and Randy Mahey was

victorious in the cruiser division feature.

The Bowl also held a 50-lap enduro Sunday night, with David Joslin

getting the win.

Devil’s Bowl Speedway will be back in action Sunday night, honoring the

Fair Haven Rescue Squad. All divisions will be in action, with racing

beginning at 7 p.m.
